Question about the Affinities and Constellations.....
In Grim Dawn, can someone explain the Affinities and Constellations? I have a character with a couple points to use but I don't understand how this part of the game works. Can anyone shed some light on this? Thanks so much!

Each constellation requires certain amount of affinity points to be unlocked. Most constellation also provide some affinity points when you complete them.

Crossroads is basic constellation that doesn't follow that rule - each star in it is separate from others, and grants exactly one affinity point of specific color.

Let's say you want to take Lion. It requires 1 yellow affinity point, so you put your initial point into yellow crossroad star. That unlocks Lion. After that, when you put next 3 points into Lion, it becomes completed, and, in its turn, starts providing 3 yellow points for whatever Constellation you want to unlock further down the line. Also, it becomes self-sustainable - at this point you can remove point from yellow Crossroad, and Lion will remain active, as it still gives 3 while requiring only 1.

You don't need to complete constellation if you don't need its affinity points though.

Following that logic, you plan your path towards desired constellations and powers.

In a more general sense think of them as another layer of abilites and stat bonuses that you can use to compliment your build or for example fill in holes where it lacks. So for example if your playing a high dps glass cannon type build youll usually pick some defensive devotions.
Thanks, guys, for your help in explaining all of this! I am very appreciative! Another question.... there are quite a few constellations to choose from. Is there a comprehensive list I could refer to online, so I could more easily compare the various choices and their benefits?
Oh, and I see my current character - the one I am playing now, I have made characters for each class - is level 11 and has two constellation points. How often does a character accrue points?
I don't think there's a definite list these days (used to be one early on, but way outdated now). You can play around in the grimtools.com build calculator to see what's available and also plan out your devotion paths.

There is this thread which covers the base game only

http://www.grimdawn.com/forums/showthread.php?t=28355

though I don't know how up to date it is.

And this thread gives you a guide to their various locations and has been updated for AoM (scroll down a bit on the first page past the deleted comments)

You get a devotion point every time you cleanse a shrine be it ruined or corrupted. Ruined ones need things to cleanse them, a component or components, scrap, rare materials like an Ancient Heart or some even require a relic. Corruputed ones you have to fight and defeat the monsters that spawn when you attempt to cleanse it.

There are a maximum of 50 devotion points available in the base game and 55 if you have Ashes of Malmouth. But there are more shrines than points so you can miss some and still mange to get 55 points.

There's a wealth of info for new players in this thread

Hey guys! I looked at the links above but didn't quite find what I am looking for. One of the links is no longer in service. I am still looking for a comprehensive list of the devotion constellations so I can compare my options and figure out what path I want to take with them.
A couple thoughts - first, I want to thank everyone for their help with the constellation situation. You all have been so helpful! And my next question is.... I just defeated the Warden and have seven devotion points to work with - am I correct to understand that some of the constellation stars take more than one devotion point to use?

No, each star takes one point.

Depends on what you mean by use. If you mean to unlock then tier 1 constellations only need one point. Tier 2 usually need more than one and sometimes need two or three different affinities as well. Tier 3's need even more.

If you mean just to start gaining the beneifts of a constellation then once it's unlocked every point put into it will give you whatever that part of the constellation grants.
I am under the assumption that I need to use one point in the middle of the constellation screen (Crossroads?) to begin assigning points to constellations. Two more questions - first, can I assign more than one point per star? And second, how do the colors work?

Everything you need to know and then some. One star = one point.

You need to put a point into a Crossroads node to unlock a particular affinity.

Not sure about your first question. You can only put one point into each node in a constellation. So you can't put two points into Chaos Crossroads node for example.

Colours are matched to the various affinities. On the left of the devotion screen where your points are, are descriptions of the affinities and if you hover over them they'll highlight which constellations need that affinity to unlock.

There are so many constellations! Most of them require more affinity points than I have. I have seven devotion points - unused because I am still new to the constellation part of the game - can anyone recommend a constellation? I am not asking you to help create my character, I can do that on my own, but just to get me started. Also, what is this about certain constellations having experience point totals? I see that they are at level one with no experience.

There are more constellations than points so you have to make choices. And really without knowing what sort of build you want to make it's not easy to recommend a constellation since some give you resistances, others damage, health/energy, etc. If you need resistances then Empty Throne is a good Tier 1 to use.

What the experience means on the constellations with proc skills is that as you gain experience the proc will level up. So a Tier 1 proc skill like Fiend's Flame Torrent can reach level 25. Tier 2 proc skills max at L20 and Tier 3 at L15. Each level increase adds to their damage when they proc off of whatever skill you've bound them to.

each build has diffrent recomended constellations. constellations that provide devotion skill required exp to level up. example you get turtle that you spend 5 devotion point in it, then you choose the skill that allowed the devotion skill intact to it, the exp of turtle devotion skill will keep increased as long it intact to a skill.
