Do you think the Taken is still an aetherial?
Heading into my third playthrough and getting really into the background lore of the game and a thought struck me... what if the Taken is still an aetherial? The main character has several options throughout the game to forgive, help, or otherwise be lenient towards aetherials, and we know that sometimes when they taken humans they end up empathizing with them instead of viewing them as fleshy hosts. Could the aetherial who possessed the Taken have just convinced the hangman in Devil's Crossing he was gone because he's smarter than the other aetherials and didn't want to lose his host?

There's also some text from Black Legion characters indicating the Taken may be on the path to ascension like Ulgrim or the witch gods, which seemed like it may be the end game here for the glorious dawn. What better way to punish the gods who cast them out of physical reality in the first place than to create an eatherial ascendant god in the physical realm? If that means the ascendant Taken has to kill a bunch of other aetherials in the process, then that would be a sacrifice worth making for them.

you got a point for sure, but seeing how many alleged sympathetic aetherials you meet (including AoM) i think there would've been some notice....that is when you can actualy trust the prisoner in the Fleshworks and all the other characters.
but yes, there alot of hints all over the game lore for the story to continue...thank god for that. Grim Dawn has imho the best story/lore in the genre...neither PoE or Diablo can even get close.
once you hit all those lore-texts, not just conversation, you see how much thought and care went into creating this amazing IP.

^^

best lore is via video presentation and that is where Diablo 3 shines, just look at blizzard and their juicy cinematics, story telling at its finest ! :steamfacepalm:

I actually thought PoE lore and environment was quite good. Instead of the cliche demon bad guy whatever, it played more off of human empires becoming monsters by abusing power. Even playing off of the ruins of earlier empires falling to the same power, leaning to the idea of history repeating itself and how humans struggle to learn lessons from the past.

It is just as grim dark as the typical demon from hell setting. I mean, literally grinding human bodies into a machine to fuel your godhood is pretty grim.

But yeah, both GD and PoE completely smash D3 on that front. Cain getting killed by butterflies is rather pathetic.
