No WASD movement?
I've never played Diablo (apparently similar). Friends decided to hop on this game for the free weekend to see if it's worth a buy- is there no WASD movement? I don't see it in the configs, even though it apparently has controller support.

No WSAD (or any key) movement
Most ARPGs dont have any either, it isnt a special thing about this one
No, and there won't be. There are several threads here already on the subject so do a search if you want to read them.

Hey MedeaFleecestealer - I'm new to ARPG's (I was unfamiliar with the term). I've played every genre of game since the 90's, but I missed out on the whole Diablo thing.

So, you sound angry, as if asking about an industry-wide standard, nearly ubiquitous control scheme somehow hurts your feelings. I apologize if I'm taking this incorrectly, but your tone sounds condescending.

It's not explicitly stated or even hinted at on the store page that this is a mouse click fest.

At any rate, there's a Autohotkey derived workaround for those in the know.

Look for "Universal WASD controls for top-down RPGs".

Thanks for not helping.
Not angry by any means. I hope you can make it work for you. But ARPGs just don't use WASD in their games - because yes, they all are click-fests. It's not industry standard for the genre. If you don't like doing that then ARPGs may not be for you.

Victor Vran (which is an ARPG) has WASD movement, though I don't know if it has a demo. I've played several ARPGs (one of my favorite genres) and WASD movements are really rare in them.

I think you'll get used to it if you just try. I still remember when I played my first 3D game which used a mouse, and I thought that it was crazy, why would anyone use a mouse to move the camera. I had only played keyboard and top-down games till then, so it was really hard to learn, but in the end it didn't take years, it took hours. The same when using a smartphone or a PS controller for the first time.

This topic has already been discussed to death here, quite contentiously at times. Bringing it up again is going to trigger some people. The bottom line is that it's not happening now, later, or ever, so any further discussion about it is pointless.

Ok I get it. Don't worry, I won't be playing it. I didn't know WASD hate was a thing.

I don't hate it. I'm just saying that the devs have made their decision quite clear and it's not going to change.

If it was clear it would be on the store page or stickied. Maybe those forum warriors who enjoy that playstyle and don't want to see questions about it should lobby to have it clearly addressed.

Hey, I'll pre-face my comment with the statement this is not meant to be hateful, condescending, or mean in any way.

Your insistence on industry standard or saying the store page should make it clear this is a "click-fest" isn't really the best use of your time. I'll list three reasons.

1.) It's an ARPG. Very few ARPG's, especially those modeled after the hack n' slash formula Diablo made popular will have WASD control. I honestly can only think of one game like that and it would be Dungeon Siege III and that game is nothing like Grim Dawn, Diablo, PoE, etc. This style of game just works best with point and click.

2.) WASD is not optimal for a game like this. It could provide an interesting movement alternative but point and click allows you to assign a movement path for your character and not worry about actively controlling them. Considering you also use the number keys for your skills using WASD for movement would require you to give up some form of skill mobility.

3.) You're still going to have to use the mouse. Even if you add WASD you'll need to be able to target enemies properly. This whole game is designed around point and click like a classic ARPG. So even if you have your preferred movement added to the game it doesn't take out the necessity of the mouse.

I hope this clears some things up.

You really shouldn't not try the game just because you can't control it with WASD, it's an awesome ARPG and worth every penny. :paradigmhead:

Bastion is a game that is controlled by WASD. IIRC mouse movement isn't implemented there.

Maybe this is an alternative for you.

In the keybinds at the very bottom you can bind a 'Move' key that allows you to hold a button and just point your mouse where you want to go so you don't have to click to move. Surprised no one here noticed this, it's pretty common and even available in Diablo 3. I have the W key bound to movement personally.

Universal WASD controls for top-down RPGs
http://www.desiquintans.com/wasdcontrols
Page quote = If you are like me, you’ve always wished you could use WASD to control the movement of your character in top-down RPGs, where you would otherwise have to click on the ground to move (Diablo, Torchlight, Titan Quest, Grim Dawn, and so on). Universal WASD (UWASD) binds mouse clicks to the WASD keys, so that pressing W places a click above your character and makes them walk up. Or you can tell UWASD to click somewhere else, like clicking to the top-left of your character in an isometric game.

UWASD also doubles as an auto-pickup macro; move your character over an item and they will grab it automatically. In the past there have been lots of requests for such a thing and not enough action, so here we are. This is handy for idle exploring or travelling, eliminating the need to keep clicking all the dang time.
