(spoilers) Direni not giving {item}...?

{item} in title = the key... I didn't confront Direni in act 1 of my new play-through (forgot). I'm at Cronley's hideout and see him at the gate in the mines. But when I talk to him I am only given the option to ask him a question or kill him. Based on the wikis I should be given the key to the sanctuary. I don't want to kill him because I read that he can be a farmable boss for reps in Ultimate (I'm playing Elite right now). Am I out of luck?

To be able to confront him id Devils crossing, you need to find a note in Burrwitch which mentions him by name. Then talk to him in DC and ask him about the letter. No further spoilers will I mention.

1 option gives you an item and other makes him farmable.
