Sounds to me like you had the Hardcore option ticked at character creation. Want to "revive" your character? Don't have Hardcore ticked at character creation.
What is the "right area" How can i see it on the map? I just want to know where i should go instead of wander around without clue..
If you do want your hand held then there is a wiki for you..

So for the first quest it tells you quite clearly to look for a cave under Burial Hill. When you reach the next portal that name comes up on the screen and then as you get near the cave entrances (there are two of them) a star will appear on the mini-map. These work for all quests, as you come close to a quest objective the star appears.

GD is also a game of exploration, not all quests are given in the various hubs or found on the main pathway.
