the 2nd mastery can be picked for utility. soldier is kinda nice simply for the fact that you get to zoom around the battlefield with the blitz skill (charge). also adds a long list of useful passive stuff to the table. can't really go wrong with soldier as your support mastery if all your damage skills are already covered by the first mastery.
inquisitor would be a decent alternative, too (if you have the 1st expansion).
I do have the first expansion, but only that one.
Can you briefly elaborate on how the inquisitor is a decent alernative?
you also have some added options for different (mostly magical) AoE skills from the inquisitor skilltree (stormbox, word of pain, rune of hagarrad, rune of kalastor).
you won't have the skillpoints to max out all of the shaman and inquisitor skills, but you have a good variety to pick from. you have both aura of censure and wind devils to remove elemental resistances, so any skill with elemental damage will be viable.
and you get deadly aim, word of renewal and inquisitor seal as generic skills that are useful for just about any build.
It sounds like a ton of fun, but I don't own that DLC yet :/
In the end I made a Warder, which seems like a good class to start with.
I think I'll experiment with a few other combinations in later playthroughs though...
EDIT:
Called it a Warden, for some reason. Fixed it.
Inquisitor and demo will add more magical spells into the mix.
