Best classes to go with for a two-handed/magic DPS build?
I like two-handed weapons and magic (mostly the AOE capabilities it offers in most games). I like being the center of the storm, so to speak.

I'm not quite sure what classes to go with to fit this, though.

I'm thinking I should either be a Battlemage (Soldier/Arcanist), Warder (Soldier/Shaman), or Druid (Arcanist/Shaman):
With the Battlemage my worry is whether the classes will synergize at all, or if they will just be two seperate classes in one dude.
Warder I hear good things about (apart from some players absolutely hating it), but I worry that I will not get to do a lot of magic and aoe.
Druid I fear will end up too squishy to comfortably run solo, even though it is probably what makes most sense (Shaman = two handed, Arcanist = magic AOE).

I already picked Soldier as my first class, but I can go back an do it over if you guys think a Druid would be best.

Any thoughts are welcome...

Warder works nicely for a two handed lightning build, Shaman/Inquisitor works for a more spell oriented AOE lighting build (with storm box, lightning totem, and wind devils). If you combine shaman with arcanist you are probably looking at Sky Shards with wind devils and maybe totem. There is also Oathkeeper/Demolitionist for a more fire focused build.

It's not really a super answer now, is it?

How is the Warder in AOE?

cuz of great two-handed weapon support.

go shaman. primal strike covers both your "twohanded" and "magic AoE" requirements. wind devils and stormtotems will add more magic AoE to the mix.

the 2nd mastery can be picked for utility. soldier is kinda nice simply for the fact that you get to zoom around the battlefield with the blitz skill (charge). also adds a long list of useful passive stuff to the table. can't really go wrong with soldier as your support mastery if all your damage skills are already covered by the first mastery.

inquisitor would be a decent alternative, too (if you have the 1st expansion).

Thank you!

I do have the first expansion, but only that one.
Can you briefly elaborate on how the inquisitor is a decent alernative?

inquisitor + shaman ( == vindicator) has the added advantage that you can pick aura of censure as your exclusive skill. i find that superior to the shamans stormcallers pact.

you also have some added options for different (mostly magical) AoE skills from the inquisitor skilltree (stormbox, word of pain, rune of hagarrad, rune of kalastor).
you won't have the skillpoints to max out all of the shaman and inquisitor skills, but you have a good variety to pick from. you have both aura of censure and wind devils to remove elemental resistances, so any skill with elemental damage will be viable.

and you get deadly aim, word of renewal and inquisitor seal as generic skills that are useful for just about any build.

Have you considered an Archon (shaman/oathkeeper)? Grab Eye of Reckoning and right-click your way through everything. Forever.

Almost every combination of Oathkeeper is "spin to win" build -_-

It sounds like a ton of fun, but I don't own that DLC yet :/

In the end I made a Warder, which seems like a good class to start with.
I think I'll experiment with a few other combinations in later playthroughs though...

EDIT:
Called it a Warden, for some reason. Fixed it.

Since you already picked soldier, you can also go inquisitor, demolitionist or oathkeeper next and go fire forcewave.(fire or elemental witj inquisitor) It would need specific items though but hey, all those classes also support physical forcewave so you can go with that early on. Forcewave is one of the best two handed spells in the game.
Inquisitor and demo will add more magical spells into the mix.
