Reading thru the comments it rather sounds like the person actually has it working - so that's kinda interesting. Try it out and let people know how it goes.
While we are at the topic, which player has the story quests? Host?
My understanding is that the "play together" was supposed to be allowing games with split-screen, local coop to run over the internet, like online multiplayer games. So, if it could be combined with the GD local, split-screen coop mod, it would allow everyone to see the quest dialogue and follow along with the story.
Edit: Yes it would be a clunky, hackish, rube-goldberg solution; but if the devs won't address the issue, what can you do?
