Soldier, Demolitionist, and Shaman are all quite strong all the way through (I have only gotten as far as Fort Icon/Act 4, so can't answer for later conditions). The secondary Mastery you choose will help define your build further.
Soldier: Nice hefty attack forms combined with good defensive buffs to get tanky.
Shaman: Primal Strike (better than Savagery in the early game) plus Swarm & Wendigo to heal.
Demlitionist: You have done this one; get fire/lightning gear and spam Grenades all over the place.
Pets are quite useful. I turned my Shaman into a Conjurer (added Occultist Mastery) so now he can summon 3 pets. Put them on aggressive and let them distract the enemy while you face tank them with Swarm and Wendigo.
The downside? You may very well be unprepared to handle the content as the difficulty catches up to you around levels 35+ since your point distribution is lopsided and your health may very likely be low.
We have trash heaps full of whiner posts who didn't understand this concept littered on the forum as a testament to this. Note: this is more a danger to noobs, once you become familiar with the game and understand the enemies and the mechanics better it gets a bit easier to use this strategy if you wish.
Also, keep in mind Normal (even with Veteran) is still the first difficulty of the game. Depending on your wisdom on building your character during this phase (talking about resistances) even Elite may seem easy to you as your character is usually basically "complete" by this point and your main concerns are now pointing your skills up the rest of the way and finding better gear. Near the end of Elite and then on to Ultimate, is where the real challenge begins.
Fasttrack Sigil of Consumption, and max out Destruction. Pump points into Shaman to max out Wendigo Totem.
With gear boosting Vitality/Chaos damage, you can facestomp anything until at least mid-game. Doesn't hurt that both of your attacks are AoE to clear groups before they can even reach you.
That combo can reach mid-game without a single health potion used.
It's called Conjurer and that's what I did also. Except that I went for more Shaman skills than Occultist. I had the Prismatic Eviscerator as a weapon, so I maxxed out Primal Strike. But three pets and Curse of Frailty were nice complementary Mastery skils.
Note: If using a weapon, gear that speeds up attack time is prime. My Conjurer is doing 2 attacks per second for some staggerig damage. If using spells as main attack form, get gear that increases spell speed.
How far have any of your OP "god mode" guys progressed? Hit Fort Ikon yet? I'm curious to hear how you deal with Lucius.
At this point I think it was a mistake, though. Should have just put points into Grasping Vines for better control and maintaining DPS with the AoE attacks.
What do you mean? He's easy..
He's easy once you figure out his timing and attack forms. The first time I fought him, however, I got wrecked. I tried to face tank him and that just didnt work. I had just gotten a nice Legendary weapon and was overconfident. Analyzing both the terrain and his timing was the key to victory.
Prior to that, I was just walking over every foe; getting cocky and careless is always a bad thing.
