"You Say Potato"
Well, actually *I* say Potato ... and if I ever heard anyone say Po-TAR-to, I'd probably have a giggle fit and ♥♥♥♥ my pants.

"Ohh Darlink, please vill you pass ze Po-TAR-toe salad ?"

Anyway, what I'm randomly wondering is AETHER

I say: Aether (Ether - like the drug)

Just wondering if anyone says Aether (Ay-ther, which sounds like someone's auntie)

I'm guessing the ETHER pronunciation is right, in fact ether was archaically spelled "aether" I think, so I'm probably all good in how I've been pronouncing it in my mind.

But yeah, I must compulsively be right at all times, and as such reaching out to you kind folk for validation or condemnation.

I do. And I don't even care if it's politcally correct or not :D Since it's a word that I rarely if ever speak out loud it doesn't matter since most its usage occurs solely in my head.

Same here, matey (♥♥♥♥ that sounds Pirate-y).

It's purely a mental word like something I read in a book but never say. If anyone did say it in day-to-day I'd be a bit worried they're spending too much time in Grim Dawn (but that said it's a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ great game so can you really spend TOO much time ?)

Just a pedantic curiosity, and yeah even if someone conclusively says it's pronounced ETHER you keep on going with whatever floats your boat

[ee-ther]

Eether... Ay-ther's second cousin, thrice removed, making him my auntie's relative, and mine, somehow, that I can legally marry. If he's cute. Or rich.

Yeah, who cares if he's cute, as long as he's rich, right? :CashMoneys::CashMoneys::OpenTreasureChest::CashMoneys::CashMoneys:

It's pronounced Po-tah-to ... mostly in New England ... there is no "R" sound in it.

And no, aether cannot possibly be pronounced "ether". Ay-ther is close, with the "ay" part rhyming with "hay". Think of it as being a German word, spelled with an umlauted "a". Historically, the actual derivation is probably Greek.

"The word αἰθήρ (aithēr) in Homeric Greek means "pure, fresh air" or "clear sky". In Greek mythology, it was thought to be the pure essence that the gods breathed"

I've heard similar substance called E-ther in other games, which makes sense (as a magic source). In my mind I say Ay-ther, since they are called Ay-thear-re-uls (never was good at phonics).

I say Po-tay-toe (not tar toe ugh) but am from a part of the country we're you might get a laugh at some pronunciations.

Intersting post. :D

Well, I thought ETHER, pronounced rhyming with SEE ... was the front-runner, but there's some pretty convincing arguments not.

The interwebs does inter-relate Ether (the drug) and Aether (an earlier name for the drug - I think because the morphic kinda lassitude puts you closer to God), and it sort of implies that it's pronounced Eeeeeeeee (see) ether.

(I've never heard anyone anywhere refer to the drug Ether with an AY (hay) sound)

So that's Point 1.

Aetherials .. I can't remember if I've heard it pronounced AY(hay)thereals in game .. but if you read some Edgar Alan Poe or similar about dark, cthulean ethereal dungeons where the tentacled thing lurked (or whatnot) then the word ethereal is almost certainly meant to be pronounced EEEEE (see) ethereal.

But chuck the A in front, maybe it is Ay (hay) thereals.

I'd buy into FRDWSM's remarks that it's definitely A (hay)ther .. but only because they sound really clever and not made-up-history.

But then I realised that this person pronounces Potato (which should be po-tae-to .. po-tay-to .. like rhymes with gay .. po-gay-to potato) .. mmmm yummy .. pogaytos.... mmm .. I could really wrap my mouth around a pogayto right now ..

Well, yeah this person pronounces it Po-tah-to .. (rhyming with car when I read it or maybe the sound a sheep makes).

So all credibility has been lost in one fell swoop :)

♥♥♥♥, now I'm just confused.

Let's go kill stuff.

Technically, it is supposed to be prounounced "ether". "Aether" is an outdated way of spelling "ether", which is likely why so many people pronounce it "Ay-ther", because you just don't see it spelled that way anymore.

@DeadlyDanDaMan: we can all go our own way on this, but I'm buying into your viewpoint and would like to subscribe to your future newsletters

I didn't say that I myself pronounced it that way; I said that in certain areas of the country it's pronounced po-TAH-to. Someone with a New England drawl would probably sound the word something like that.

When other games like Pokemon use the word Ether (Eee -ther) they're refferencing a literal modern product called Diethyl Ether which is usually used to kickstart modern vehicular engines.

Aether is a nonsense word made up word, usually describing some kind of sci-fi magic. I've almost always heard it pronounced (Ay - ther).

erhmn... it's "potato to-MAR-to" ;) :claugh:
alrighty jks over, -i say aether(eether) too, tho not so much for the "correctness" of it, but because everytime i jump in aetherfire i go: "Yea baby lets huff some ether!", -which usually fits, because seems statistically they both lead to the same death ratio
