It's purely a mental word like something I read in a book but never say. If anyone did say it in day-to-day I'd be a bit worried they're spending too much time in Grim Dawn (but that said it's a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ great game so can you really spend TOO much time ?)
Just a pedantic curiosity, and yeah even if someone conclusively says it's pronounced ETHER you keep on going with whatever floats your boat
Eether... Ay-ther's second cousin, thrice removed, making him my auntie's relative, and mine, somehow, that I can legally marry. If he's cute. Or rich.
Yeah, who cares if he's cute, as long as he's rich, right?
And no, aether cannot possibly be pronounced "ether". Ay-ther is close, with the "ay" part rhyming with "hay". Think of it as being a German word, spelled with an umlauted "a". Historically, the actual derivation is probably Greek.
"The word αἰθήρ (aithēr) in Homeric Greek means "pure, fresh air" or "clear sky". In Greek mythology, it was thought to be the pure essence that the gods breathed"
I say Po-tay-toe (not tar toe ugh) but am from a part of the country we're you might get a laugh at some pronunciations.
Intersting post. :D
The interwebs does inter-relate Ether (the drug) and Aether (an earlier name for the drug - I think because the morphic kinda lassitude puts you closer to God), and it sort of implies that it's pronounced Eeeeeeeee (see) ether.
(I've never heard anyone anywhere refer to the drug Ether with an AY (hay) sound)
So that's Point 1.
Aetherials .. I can't remember if I've heard it pronounced AY(hay)thereals in game .. but if you read some Edgar Alan Poe or similar about dark, cthulean ethereal dungeons where the tentacled thing lurked (or whatnot) then the word ethereal is almost certainly meant to be pronounced EEEEE (see) ethereal.
But chuck the A in front, maybe it is Ay (hay) thereals.
I'd buy into FRDWSM's remarks that it's definitely A (hay)ther .. but only because they sound really clever and not made-up-history.
But then I realised that this person pronounces Potato (which should be po-tae-to .. po-tay-to .. like rhymes with gay .. po-gay-to potato) .. mmmm yummy .. pogaytos.... mmm .. I could really wrap my mouth around a pogayto right now ..
Well, yeah this person pronounces it Po-tah-to .. (rhyming with car when I read it or maybe the sound a sheep makes).
So all credibility has been lost in one fell swoop :)
♥♥♥♥, now I'm just confused.
Let's go kill stuff.
I didn't say that I myself pronounced it that way; I said that in certain areas of the country it's pronounced po-TAH-to. Someone with a New England drawl would probably sound the word something like that.
Aether is a nonsense word made up word, usually describing some kind of sci-fi magic. I've almost always heard it pronounced (Ay - ther).

Well, dat's jes pure iggorants!
erhmn... it's "potato to-MAR-to" ;)
alrighty jks over, -i say aether(eether) too, tho not so much for the "correctness" of it, but because everytime i jump in aetherfire i go: "Yea baby lets huff some ether!", -which usually fits, because seems statistically they both lead to the same death ratio
