Hey diablo 3 necromancer is fun. The action with 30+ minions is hilarious.

Edit: Okay they are only 7 skeletons 11 reanimated corpses and 4 skeleton mages, but hey it is fun. Mages do 100 million damage crits.

Problem with d3's pet build is that it pigeonholes your entire playstyle, not just the pet portion.

Yes that is true. You have to use a certain set armor, you have to use singularity mages, you need them to progress in torment difficulty. The whole character is based around the mages buffing your pets to hilarious damage output. But it is fun. A marauding skeleton horde, reanimated corpses and the mages nuking it out on the diablo 3 battlefields. I laugh every time when an enemy is kicked out of the vision range.

Considering you have more interesting build options then +skills, more +skills and what aura to use on your merc... I'm gonna say GD Necro is better hands down. D2 was a great game for its time, but GD blows it out of the water in so many ways its not even funny. The only real thing that may bother people is the GD Necro is gonna cap at a little over 20 summons (with duo class, gear, etc), D2 Necro could double that not even counting revives.

But was it playable. On modern pc it runs without problems, but i recall that a heavy pet build was rather demanding performance wise on older pc systems. You could bring down lan party diablo 2 servers with a necro pet build.

Yeah, it had performance issues on old computers, especially if they were playing in Direct3D, although I don't think it's possible to play in Direct3D without performance issues.

DIablo II necro was cool but it also had several skills literally no one ever used. Remember that great "boosts poison damage but only on daggers with a character that gets less chance to hit per DEX investment than any other character" skill? Whoa boy, did that suck and blow at the same time.

I do not see what is wrong with the diablo necromancer. You distribute less points into pointless skill trees, you do not have to distribute attribute points. the gameplay is fast und fluid, the action is fun, the itemization is quite good, you can farm to your hearts content and you can play more and more difficult content. Everything an action rpg needs. And when you are bored you can stop playing and do something else.
