tl;dr
weapon matters.
Or basically how important in the gear in general compared to the skill tree. Can you walk around naked and still kill things okay as a caster? Or gear is a massive element to your damage, like say 85/15
For instance Callidor's Tempest deals 12% Weapon Damage, +6-8 Aether Damage, and 8-10 Fire Damage base at level 1. So 12% of your main hand weapon damage + 12% of any added flat or DoT damage from gear/devotions/buffs will apply to the skill.
If you add the Wrath of Agrivix skill modification, then the 12% weapon damage will become 12% + 50% = 62% x 2.75 (total damage) = 170.5% weapon damage applied to the skill.
If a skill has no % weapon damage listed, then the flat listed damage on weapons/gear/devotions/buffs do nothing, ie) +10-25 damage, but all % increased damage of the appropriate type after conversions will apply. For instance if you have +100% increased physical damage on your weapon it will be added to all other increased physical damage and applied to any physical damage after conversion is calculated.
Walking around naked will eventually only suffice to kill your character.
Or time how long it takes to kill a certain add or boss naked and with gear, or a dummy/meter if thats in game.
I want to see a rough example per class, to see which classes are much more gear dependant and in general how important the gear is to skills per class maybe.
Early levels it's more skill dependent due to +flat and +% damage on skills, which is difficult to find on gear early on.
However, late game gear is more important due to the huge +% damage and +flat damage bonuses on gear at high levels.
