for example, i actually played 2 different commandos all the way to level 85 and finished ultimate.
one of them is a sword&board melee tank, the other is a rifle based ranged glass cannon. both use the same 2 masteries, but use a vastly different skillset. i think the only overlap of by 2 commando builds are the passive auras and buffs.
the melee tank uses cadence, blitz, forcewave, warcry and overguard as main skills. he's kinda slow and a bit boring to play, but he's pretty much invincible.
the rifleman uses firestrike, flashbang, grenado, canisterbomb, thermite mines and i think i also had some component or item based spell on my toolbar. if i really wanted, i could probably also move some points into mortar trap and blackwater cocktail.
they play very differently.
Demolitionist grant you access to great many tools to CC and debuff. Firestrike can be used with either melee or range build. BWC, flashbang, and thermite mine can debuff group of enemy quite effectively. Canister bomb and stunjack can CC a large group of enemy. Few auras can buff yourself and CC as well.
Soldier side has access to physical damage. War cry is probably something you should max to reduce enemy health, damage, physical resistance, and disrupt enemy skill. Cadence deal massive direct damage every third hit, it also grants buff to the two other hit and AOE with upgrade. Forcewave gives CC and armor debuff. Bladearc deal massive damage with clean sweep transmuter. It also give you circuit breaker(menhir will) that stop you from getting one shot (if you have enough health to activate it). Various passive to build up your durability. Also movement skill like blitz is crucial for melee build.
The thing that you don't have is direct healing capability which you have to find from devotion proc.
My current build is SB firestrike build. Firestrike, BWC, thermite mine, auras, blitz and passive from soldier make a quite tanky and versatile in term of tactic. Heal from giant's blood and some potion chugging keep him alive.

Many are quite detailed and with video. Should be able to find something you like.
Also make sure to pay attention to components. Lots of them give you additional skills, some of which are quite good.
