Thx for commenting. I would also like to see an upgrade to controls even though the GC controller is good
That remake is the only way I could play this game, and I want it.
Journey of Dreams being brought to Steam would literally be a dream come true.
JSRF was such a fun game, but my XBox broke years ago. It'll be great they were released for Steam. Not just for me and the original players, but for new players too. If we keep up the support for these franchises on Steam, surely Valve will deliver.
Doing this would be great for gamers who never had an xbox (like yours truly) and I'm sure they can turn a profit with it. Just have Steam promote it a bit and it can be a hit.
Just to note a few things:
- For some awkward reason the game struggles to hold the framerate above 10 during cutscenes, but during gameplay it works fine.
- Who the heck thought that making secondary missions and Hard mode mandatory for story progression is a good idea?
- Boring and way too long cutscenes for a storyline which shouldn't have this amount of detail in it. The original game told a story with zero narration and with a very little amount of cutscenes.
- I personally think that the "not true" ending is the better one in terms of narrative, heavily explaining the fact that darkness cannot exist without light.
- Judging from the rarest of cases when the game actually allowed me to play as the real NiGHTS I noticed that he has "Modern" Sonic gameplay now (speed matters, not effectiveness) while the original gameplay's goal was to score points in "bonus mode" for as long as possible while also leaving for ourselves some time to reach the exit of the level.
Things that I actually liked in JoD:
- Visual level designs, atmosphere, the soundtrack, a few of the missions
- Boss battles, Bellbridge and the final battle
- NiGHTS' redesign, his voice didn't bother me either, I found it nice
So yeah, if they were to re-release it, they should totally remake it from the ground up, so it'll be an actual NiGHTS game, not a half-assed Sonic Adventure 2 with minor NiGHTS elements.
I do think they should completely remake the game also. I think they should make the boss battles better (aka make them not be so based on trial and error), better graphics, new voice actors (even though the old ones werent that bad) and make it more popular by advertising it more than just putting it in an issue of Nintendo Power
Beyond the motion controls, that was the second biggest issue I had with the game. It felt like I had to do a lot of learning (and cutscenes, and tutorials) to get into the game, whereas NiD put you directly into the game, and then you learned that way. I always thought it felt more natural when the gameplay taught you how to play directly, rather than relying on direct tutorials devoid of the full context of the gameplay.
And the cutscenes as well... just felt like it took me a while to get into it all. I think there was something to the cutscene-minimal, no-tutorial aspect of the original. You can't really prepare for dreams (ideas of lucid dreaming aside), they just happen, and I kind of liked that. The sense of learning and discovery was a big part of the original for me.
It doesn't matter for me as long as I can have a versus mode in NiGHTS. After all, if I want to play a NiGHTS game that is the same as original, I'll just play the original game.
Okay, I guess?
Normally I'd say that improvement and some sort of evolution is necessary to keep a franchise fresh, but in the case of NiGHTS there were only two games made in a timespan of more than a decade, so the second game shouldn't be this different from the first one howewer ST for some reason felt that they need to almost completely reinvent NiGHTS save for the most important core elements which makes as much sense as if the second Sonic game made after Sonic 1 would have been Shadow The Hedgehog.
I think they are more likely to update j.o.d. rather than make a new game. Sega is more interested in sonic rather than investing in a brand new game
Yes, of course. In the state that Sega is now, I can believe in the possibility. But we need to keep good hopes in a new NiGHTS game. (ah! I'm Brazilian :D )
So, anyway, yeah, a remake could be cool; as the others mentioned, there are a lot of things that could be improved. But a new game would be even cooler. But I doubt they would consider it profitable (a game has to sell really poorly to become only two bucks used, right?) Here's hoping they surprise us.
I should point out that the motion controls were optional, though (aside from a short moment during the tutorial where it forced you to try using the Wii Remote pointer); you could play with Wii Remote + Nunchuk, for example. I think you could even play with a Gamecube controller.
Funny story, I also got the game for 2 bucks, along with samba de amigo which was 3 dollars. Weird.
Anyway the reason that I want journey of dreams to be remade is that it's kind of obscure and I think it does a better job of introducing people to the series and I think it acts as the best access point for new players. Cleaning it up and releasing it would be a great way of increasing intrest in the franchise.
