I can't seem to figure out exactly how the A-Life works.
I've searched online but I found nothing. Some sort of guide would be awesome!

A-Life? Explain?

A-Life? Explain?

Taken from Wikipedia:
"Aside from the immediate game mission, the game also contains an artificial life ("A-Life") system, a precursor to the Chao featured in Sonic Team's later Sonic Adventure titles. The system involves entities called Nightopians. The game keeps track of the moods of the Nightopians (harming them will displease them, for example), and the game features an evolving music engine, allowing tempo, pitch, and melody to alter depending on the state of Nightopians within the level. It is also possible to merge Nightopians with the small Nightmaren enemies, creating a hybrid being called a Mepian. It is even possible through extensive controlled breeding to produce a "King" Pian, or Superpian. An expanded version of the A-life system was included in Nights: Journey of Dreams."

Basically I'm wondering how exactly you breed nightopians, how does one actually harm them, and what happens when you paraloop them. And any other information anyone might have on this, because I'm completely lost.
As far as i know it is all in a level and there is an achievment for creating a Mephian. You can find achievment guide on how to creat one.Never tried/noticed the rest the rest explained from the wiki

That's pretty much all the info I've been able to get. I was really into the chao gardens on sa1 and sa2, so I guess I'm just interested in seeing where that idea came from really. Anyway, thanks for the info. If anyone else knows anything let me know.

Nightopians seem to breed randomly as far as i can tell but if you dash into a nightmaren (which turns them into a ball that bounces around) and they hit a nightopian then you get a mepian, which will inherit some features of the nightmaren that created it. If you manage to get 2 mepians with different features to breed you can get a king nightopian which apparently builds a tower within the level. I saw a youtube video about that before but i cant find it now :/

Also paralooping nightopians kills them and affects the mood of the other nightopians in the level. It also removes the bonus that you can collect on the last part of the stage by touching the nightopian above the starting point (which is based on the number of stars you have collected). The mood of the nightopians also changes the background music. Paralooping mepians and nightopians being killed by nightmarens hitting them (which sometimes happens) do not affect either of the above.

Another thing worth mentioning is that mepians breed a lot faster than nightopians, meaning if you end up with a couple they will spam eggs and slowly kill off the nightopians. If this happens you can reset the A-Life by paralooping them all and completing the level, which will restore 10 nightopians with neutral mood. Quitting without completing the level will not save any changes. Restarting a level will also restore the previous state of the A-Life, although the same behaviour is not always guaranteed - sometimes nightmarens will move on different paths after a restart.

You can unlock the nightopian collection, which shows the activity and mood of each nightopian by completing both the base game and the christmas nights levels, which are unlocked by completing the base game. If you get all nightopians and mepians in a level to be as happy as possible, then in the nightopian collection they will sing a version of "Dreams Dreams".

Hope that helps

Helps a lot! I don't know why it was so hard to find anything about this with a quick google search. Thank you so much.
Paralooping Nightopians kills them, so what does that mean in Journey of dreams when you go into the Nightopian garden...
How do you even access the A-Life feature in the game, both Saturn and PC? Are they part of the levels or separate from them? I didn't really use it because I thought I couldn't.

I wish I knew what they were talking about, but I played this game in 1998 when I was 5 years old and having it on my PC today is magical.

The game has a feature that lets you raise your own Nightopians apart from the main game.

I've yet to access that feature with my save data even after I beat the game as Claris.

I'm actually talking about the original console version before it got ported to PC.

Even so, doesn't the PC port have its own A-Life system too?

Old thread I know but there's such little info on this system. It's not actually a separate mode, it's part of every level you go to in the game, interacting with the nightopians inside the level.

yeah i don't know a lot to it myself and nobody who talks about it online seems to cover it much either (the most i saw anything on youtube in particular was from a video on the Sonic Adventure games' Chao Gardens since this was the precursor) but as far as i know with the mechanics, two 'pians close together will make an egg you can then approach and hatch, and somehow if you launch a nightmaren into a regular nightopian i believe that's how you make a mepian, and two unique types of mepian (as in they don't share parts from the same nightmaren) have a chance to make a king pian and they all interact in their own ways (kings build castles, some mepians may attack other pians and that'll make the king attack all mepians from their castle in retaliation) and their overall happiness influences the way the level's music sounds. you can also kill them by paralooping them, and this ofc makes them unhappy and scared of you. i only recently picked this up for free because i enjoyed the wii game, so i don't have a lot of experience with the system (the majority of this info is what I could find from others) but I am super intrigued by it and wanna figure out more about it.

I think the A-Life system comes from the original game itself. See if you can track it down and obtain a Saturn, 3D Control Pad, and the game like I did years ago.
