Can't play on controller
Just bought this and I can't seem to play on my Xbox One controller or my Mad Katz controller. Is this game only playable with a keyboard?

There's a topic a couple lines down addressing this, I guess it used to work and there is a workaround but it's not super convenient?

Found this on another topic discussing my same issue. I think I found a fix!

Belpowerslave has NiGHTS into Dreams... 30 Aug @ 1:46am
I don't know when or why it has happened, but some update killed or just screwed up the game's options. Before you launch the game, right click on the game's title(in Steam) and select "Game Configuration". From there you can enable the controller and select the resolution(as well as a Full Screen option). Not sure why Sega does it this way(virtually all of their games use this method), but whatever...

Does not work! Does not matter whether I run the config app before or after running the game - the config app fails to close and run the game, even when I don't set anything, ie default values only.. And the screen resolution cannot be set up as well - no resolutions are presented, only a blank selection area. I can't set anything with the config app, not even fullscreen.

Manually altering the plain text/xml config files has absolutely no effect at all, the game ignores them (?) but if they are deleted, they will not be recreated and the game wont run! (These configs are in the Steam directory "Steam\steamapps\common\NiGHTS Into Dreams\Config\" - don't delete them, or the game will NOT run and they will NOT be recreated! You will have to reinstall the game, though it suffices to make a local backup of the game, uninstall and reinstall from backup, and the configs will be there again)

THERE IS A SOLUTION to using a gamepad: use a keymapper program. I use JoyToKey, no special tweaking necessary with this game, just map the game predefined keys to your gamepad and the game is playable, though in windowed mode.. Open the configuration app for this game and look at what keyboard keys they assigned so that you know what is what and how you want to set up your gamepad with the keymapper. (I mapped WASD to my left analog stick and the HAT, JU to my XA buttons and camera actions to the shoulder and trigger buttons. Works great.)

Well, I'm happy I got this game at all.. It has both the original Saturn game and the new remastered versions (says on the main menu, just started playing), so it's a great deal anyhow. I'm playing on my laptop so the windowed mode is not that bad. Most importantly, I can use my gamepad and the game runs very smooth :)

Though I sincerely hope that a mod will be made for this to fix these issues, like for Sonic Adventure DX - the bare bones, vanilla install is UNPLAYABLE - no gamepad support, display errors, etc.. But with BetterSADX the game works - and can be even launched offline without invoking Steam.

Use (double click) the LAUNCHER file in the game folder (it looks exactly like the .exe except for name so don't get them mixed up), if it gives an error then you need to install .NET Framework 3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0) then try launcher in geme folder again and all options including gamepad are there, at least it worked for me today 16th Aug '21.

If your gamepad is not correctly detected - like analog triggers being treated as digital buttons - install Microsoft Visual C++ 2015-2019 Redistributable. (I installed the x86 version on my 64 bit system and it works fine).
