The Community: The Truth Behind the Sad State of this Game
First of, I will say that RUSE is an amazing game in its own right. Great storyline, and great mechanics in general.

Here is the problem with this game, and why it is so unpopular: the community.

I LOVE this game alot. Several years ago, I first bought this game for the Xbox 360 when it came out back in 2010. Beat the campaign and did many battles against the AI in general. Never did multiplayer due to the fact that I never had xbox gold.

Anyway, I had fun, but that came to an end. Our 360 broke down eventually, rendering RUSE useless. I moved over to the Xbox One, and RUSE, of course, wasn't on there. So I decided to buy it here on steam, mainly to do the multiplayer and enjoy this game in general.

That's where the problems began. Due to the fact that I was level 1 at the beginning of multiplayer, it was a difficult time for me. Every single game I tried to join started like this: "YOU'RE NOOB, I KICK YOU!" Needless to say, I usually got kicked. Any game i decently managed to join, it was full of trash-talking about how nooby I was. It ticked me off, to be honest.

Throughout the course of multiplayer, not very many people actually tried to be nice and help the newer people who joined this game. In fact, there was only one person who actually tried to help me level up by grinding in order to gain an amount of respect in multiplayer. His name: Quillian. He kind of understood the predictament that was befalling me in multiplayer, so we did some private matches to grind for experience points. After doing several of these, I noticed the slow amount of general respect within the online community that was growing.

Due to that, I gained a conclusion. Most people in this game only care about the level 100s. That's about it. Even today, some games I find kick people who are not automatically level 10 out. It's a sad piece of nastiness. It shows me that 90% of anyone here doesn't care. All of them are just elitists who care about no one but their lvl 100 OPNESS.

This game is dying because the newer guys refuse to play with these people. Some people want to learn how to do this game, but they are snobbed and rejected by these elitists wherever they go. There's no community support in this game, hands out. It's basically a dog-eats dog world where no one cares.

Let me take a recent game for instance. At this time of writing, I crossed into the threshold of the level 70s. One particular game in Center of Gravity was intriguing. I was experimenting with the Russian faction at that point, seeing how well a massed T-34 attack would crumple a flank. Needless to say, it worked and knocked out one of the opposing team members. Unfortuantly, there were no admins on our side after that assault. Due to that, we couldn't muster enough troops for a counterassault against the Japanese. Throughout that, my teamates were continously calling me "noob" , and how I was a waste of utter trash. Well, the T-34 attack worked, so I thought to myself "stuff it." We lost in the end due to the lack of admins, and blame was placed on me for the whole thing due to my T-34 attack.

There is a reason for this story. RUSE is first and formost A TEAM GAME.. TEAM GAME. If anyone doesn't want to cooperate, it is the downfall of a team. My partner was the one who failed to make admins while I was taking the whole brunt of the massed attack. But hooray, all the blame was on me, and "noob" shouts were called. Let me tell you this: just because someone is having a bad day or a bad game, it does not make them noob.

Take for instance, the applications of generals. General Montgomery was having a bad day, and lost Operation Market-Garden due to poor planning. But did anyone call him a noob? Nopey-doo. Many of his other battles, he did well. Same for commanders on here, they have their good days, and their bad days. But unfortunatly, if they have a bad day, they're branded a "noob" for life.

An alarming lack of honor is displayed in this game. Personally, I am a great advocate of Murphy's Military Laws. What's stupid is the lack of dictation regarding this. My favorite one is this: "If a plan is stupid, but works, it's not stupid." I can't tell you how many games my plan fell into this category. I was spat upon and hated due to some of these plans..., but hey, they worked. We won some of these games thanks to my stupid plan, which turned to not be stupid. Mostly worked on Center of Gravity though.. Bottom line, there is no respect for anyone and their conduction of the game. Many people are unorthondox on how they play, but if it works well in the end, there is no need to hate on them.

Referencing back to earlier, I did move over from the 360, but I was automatically assumed as "inferior." Let me reference another phrase: "It's not the veteran generals you need to watch out for, it's the unpredictable amatuers." That was taken on an outline from a similar sort of law. This game is all about predictability. Doesn't the prowess of people qualify them? Some days, a good general may be worse than a new person to the game.

In conclusion: the community is killing this game. The lack of respect for anyone, the honor of military laws, and the general scandalizing of this endavour in general is ripping us apart. I wouldn't be suprised if Ubisoft decided not to make a RUSE 2 due to the fact that no one cares. If you want proof of new players being bullied away from a match, go take a look at the buy page for RUSE. There, you can see PLENTY of negative reviews about problems people have with multiplayer.

If I didn't love RUSE so much, I would have left long ago. But I love this game and its experiences, so I will stay for as long as this game lives. People just can't be decent, that's the problem.

Special thanks to Quillian for being the only one who probably had the guts to help educate me on the PC version of this game. Bacchus and a few others were nice as well.

Phew, there ends my rant. Comment on this discussion below, I sure would like to hear opinions on this.

*This is from my generalization of the game, I do not mean to offend others*

Well that is a long rant... may I have a shortened conclusion instead of having me spend countless minutes reading it?

Your complaint is nothing that's specific to ruse really, most if not all multiplayer games are like this. That's why it's usually best to find some friends and stick with them.

I can play with you if you want.

I agree with you. I am level 100 but that doesn't mean that I'm good in multiplayer. I have no problems with playing together with lower levels. But I think that the community isn't the biggest problem of RUSE. The game wasn't well advertised when it came out and it was only a few weeks before Civ V hit the market. This dumb decision from Ubisoft was the reason that RUSE had problems from the beginning.

On the other side, the game sold more copies than all three games from the Wargame series together, that's not too bad. A second RUSE would be awesome!!

We won't get a ruse 2, Act of Aggression from the same developers but another publisher is the closest thing we'll have to it. The game looks quite promising

If you don't want to be kicked, then host the game!!!
What you are complaining about is human nature. History looks clean 70 years after, but leaders and generals in WWII did not behave at all like gentlemen. What made them different is how resilient they were to all their enemies (axis and allies).

some people think cooperation is do exactly what they are told even when they have thier own stratigies

why should i use my ruse points and money to an unproven idea? becuase someone else thinks what they think of is more important!!!

that said free for all mode allows all player to make their own decisions!!!

It is defenitaly an unfortunate reality, but like liquid ice said this happens in all games, not only ruse. If you want join the ruse 2015 tournament group. We are a casual ruse gaming community that hosts regular tournaments on saturdays. No skill required to join the group or play in the tournaments. Here is a link to the group and our next tournament.

It would be nice if there was some kind of matchmaking system.

I am curious: what happens when you host your own games?
I do not play much online, but I tried when I was level 32 I created 1v1 games and quickly found another player without drama.

I agree completely. This has happened to me countless times. My solution was to buy the game for a friend and get him into it. Since then, we've ignored MP and just hosted our own private matches. I think that the best solution to this problem is to make a few good friends and play matches with them. Maybe starting a forum thread asking for another player(s) to join you would be appropriate here?

All you need to do is to just host your own Multiplayer games. There are a lot of people with low levels and little experience out there so the lobby should fill quickly.

Bingo! problem solved! Since you have the ability to host your own games, crying about getting kicked from game lobbies is just silly and a waste of time. As a level 100 player, I've been kicked out of several game lobbies by players that wanted just low level opponents, and that's just fine, I just hosted my own game lobby, no tears necessary.

Yes I tried it yesterday (I am level 40 woohoo). Hosted a 1v1 game, waited 30s, played against a level 100 and as expected I lost the game but enjoyed it a lot. If like me yesterday you can not find what is the key for multiplayer chat (not shown on the commands screen), it is ENTER for team chat, SHIFT+ENTER to talk to everyone.
