You can play with steam friends, just not super easily. Join a server and get your friend to press "Join Game" in your steam chat. It works fine. Also, there is a tab in server list that shows the games your friends are in...

This is exactly what I wanted to do when i bought the game too. I dont think there are bots (could be wrong) so if you created a game and invited your friends it'd just be you and your friends in the match.
In game, any steam friends playing will have their name visable so you know who/ where they are (as opposed to all the non steam friend players who wont have a name displayed) making it easy for groups to work together. I'll admit, there arn't many maps or options for creating custom games but what is there is quite good.
There are free for all servers dedicated to dueling aswel, so if you and a friend want to duel uninterrupted you can join and if anyone you dont want to play with tries to innitiate a duel you dont have to accept and they should leave you be.
If larger scale team/ objective based modes are your thing I highly recommend you and your friends give one of the many thriving public servers a go, join the same team as soon as the option becomes available and work as a team against human players, imo far more satisfying than defeating bots.
Perhaps DO NOT BUY if you plan on playing with ONLY steam friends and bots as this game is PvP/ team DM orientated.
Gamers take note, there are golden moments to be had here, no other medievil mellee combat game manages to impart such a chunky feeling of connection upon weapon collision. You will get mutilated, ganged up on, stabbed in the back, set on fire, shot by sneaky archers, decapitated by careless/ confused team mates, have your sword arm lopped off from the side as you try to land the finnishing blow on a wounded combatant and all manner of dirty, underhanded, unfair demises. You will have ample oppertunity to do the same to others. This might sound frustrating but I've never had so much fun, win or loose, regardless.
Don't miss out on a little gem like this because its' options appear lackluster compared to other titles.

It is possible to create dedicated server. You can download Chivalry dedicated server in Library-tools. To connect to server open console `, and type open x.x.x.x where x.x.x.x is your ip. If you connected through router - then you also need to use hamachi.

You're ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ retarded. Some servers give an error sure, but most of them friends can join fine. You join a server then your steam friend CLICKS on his steam friends, and press join game on your stupid name. Wait 5 seconds for it to begin loading, sometimes it errors yes. Then find another server that doesn't. Not that big of a deal.

This blows. Do I need a200 page Worth of 'How to play Chivalry with Friends for Dummies'-book or what??? I can't participate in my cousins game, he can't participate in mine. No 'invite to game' or nothing. There's no way to join a friends game at all either. You can't even tell what you name your server if you create one. I Have no idea how to play this game with actual friends cause there's just no telling where you're playing or whatever. I'm certain it's possible in some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ way but... Great service for a free weekend guys - I'm so NOT buying this game. I Was going to, but not now. Obviously ppl don't know how to make a user friendly interface.
