Not the mention the Masons were not a conquered nation rebelling. The tutorial mentioned something along those lines, but the Masons were just a part of a war team that eventually split up.
Hey come everyone this guy's hilarious haha LAWL
Also, I wouldnt say they were evil, they are "The People" who want to overthrow the king because they think he is unsuitable.
The Agathians are a bunch of self-righteous, prigish, hypocritical aristocrats who say they want to protect the people but are often brutal and oppressive.
The Masons are a popular uprising, but led by a tyrannical military dictator and a small core of traitorous warriors, and they are incredibly cruel to almost everyone they come across, often for no real reason.
There are no real good guys, and I think that the developers did a good job charachterizing the factions.
And Malric used to eat a kitten every time someone said that they were going to release the SDK.
And they're also both western european. One of the analogies on tvtropes was also capitalism (agatha, blue) vs. communism (mason, red), but that has no merit except colours. If anything, the masons are more into capitalism, because they happen to be a guild (maybe not free market, since guilds tend to regulate prices), but its very stupid and has absolutely no bearing on modern politics, being set in the middle ages.
My opinion: The agathians are 'insert englishy kingdom here' and are fighting to keep their land and their wealth. They're the knightly order, because the knigths own the land, and all the men at arms and vangaurd (lesser knights), and archers are just servants in the employ of the knights. The king supports the agathians, because their power was established through the feudal system, which is how the king basically rules all his subjects in the first place.
The mason order on the other hand, are a guild. They're a bunch of wealthy merchants and everyone that fights for them are the developing middle class that doesn't want to be oppressed by knights that rule through birth right anymore. King Mulric is a self acclaimed king. Either he's some noble within the kingdom that chafed against the rule of the king, or he's a self acclaimed king that the guild 'elected' to become the new king. It's the middle ages, so monarchy is the only form of rule that is understood by anyone - in other words, Mulric wants to whipe out the king's lineage and institute a new lineage, which will probably take away all the knights lands, maybe establish another knightly order (land tenants; whoever is needed to defend the place from further rebellion/invasion) and give more power to the merchants in the process.
The mason capital is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ mordor, because mordor looks awesome.
Pushing plague infested corpses into water reservoir and slaughtering peasants? Quite Chivalrous indeed.
Agatha is supposed to be painted as the good guys, but when you look into things, neither side is really right. Though considering Malric's army is quite brutal, the Masons would probably end up attracting the ire of Agatha's neighbors more so than the current family and cause another war in the near future should they seize the crown.
The good fight is lost no matter what side you pick, but Agatha's current ruling family would be much better in the long run than Malric and the Mason Order.
