The Varangian guard was the royal guard of the Byzantine emperors. It wasn't made up of Byzantines however. It was made up of Viking and Anglo-Saxon mercenaries. Norsemen essentially. The reasoning Behind that is that mercenaries won't have any political ambitions so they generally won't end up assassinating their own emperor. They are well paid, equipped by the state with the best equipment and given a whole lot of other bonuses. They lose all that if they fail to protect their emperor.
