Mod for improving framerate
When i found that my game could barely keep above 20 fps (or 5 if the server had 16+ players, or a wide open map), i decided to look for a way to screw around in the files to help. The bSmooth=False trick only really added sbout 2 frames in the really bad areas, so a 'simple' fix was not possible. Then i found this mod that lowers the graphics beyond minimum, called the 'runescape' mod.

http://pastebin.com/T5iAmE9C

It looks something like this;

Now, i thought that this would work, but apparently on Macs it does nothing because I see literally no change besides some in-game graphics and window size setting changes. I feel that either Macs need more .ini file changes to get it working, or that its dead due to no updates for it.

So, unless someone can figure this out, i, and probably a 'few' others are forced to wait for an optimazing patch.

MAC is still a Beta in believe.

bSmooth should be left to True... all you have to do is raise the top number to like 90 or 120 (like if you have a 120hz monitor and a state of the art PC. but the "smoothing" is there for a reason. It's simply a filter to slow down the transitions in high and low fps. Wont make the game run faster. Turning off DOF, blur, dynamic lighting, AA, shadows, rag-dolls and decals down will help a lot.

I use WinPC... in your launcher, do you also have an option for Safe Mode?

From the way i understand it, safe mode turns all the bells and whistles to off and low, that are in the in game Gfx options + a few additional ones.

There also used to be a console command that could be used to tun all the games gfx setting to below the lowest settings in the option menu. But, i have forgotten it. ill search goog's and see if i can find it.

Ps. Rune mod looks, well, like a game from the 90's... like 455. i noticed in the pastebin file that screen res is 1280x720... that dude must be using a Pentium 4 and windows 98. Guy just went in and turned almost everything to false... not very scientific. I'll bet a bunch of those settings had very little effect on fps.

My 3.16 dual core and 6850 can run CHIV in 1280x720 easily at 60fps with all settings on medium (but with shadows and AA turned off). But, i absolutely hate jaggies and the strobe affect they give off.

I think simply building a new PC for about a $1200-15 would max out all CHIV settings.

*Update... to whom it may concern... here are the console commands to experiment with:

http://udn.epicgames.com/Three/ConsoleCommands.html

*System Settings Commands

The System Settings commands allow you to change the settings as described by the SystemSettings document, which are normally set by the Application Compatibility system.

• SCALE [scale command] - where [scale command] is one of:

◦ ADJUST - enable/disable using the Xbox "shoulder" buttons to bind to SCALE DECR and SCALE INCR
◦ DECR - decrement the ScreenPercentage setting
◦ DUMP - dump current system settings to the log
◦ DUMPINI - dump the INI system settings to the log
◦ INCR - increment the ScreenPercentage setting
◦ LEVEL [0-5] - set one of the Application Compatibility levels, from 0 to 5.
◦ LOWEND - assume a very low end list of settings
◦ HIGHEND - assume a very high end list of settings
◦ RESET - reload the system settings from the INI file
◦ SET [setting] [value] - set a specific setting (listed in the SystemSettings document) to a certain value
◦ TOGGLE [setting] - toggle a boolean setting

"I thnk" if you type in, SCALE LOWEND , it selects the lowest level "bucket" (bucket 1?) in the systemsettings.ini... similarly, SCALE HIGHEND = Bucket 5?.

"i think" SCALE LEVEL [0-5] can be used to select the other bucket settings, but not sure what will happen if "0"... i'm gonna try right now :)

*OK, went and tried these Unreal 3 commands (some work)... if you type in the console the word, SCALE ,it will list the availalble "active" commands and their definitions on use.

Hope i was of help in some way.

Sorry but most Macs are horrible for gaming no matter what you do. Your best bet would be to dual boot your machine so that you have both Mac and Windows installed on it. That way when you want to game just reboot your machine into windows and game. Some Macs just don't have the hardware, mustle or power to game. Others you cannot get into the system to do a dual boot. It does take some technical skills to pull it off but that is the best case scenario.

Yes unless you spend like $6000 on a Mac it probably won't be that great for running games.
