That is not the case. If memory serves me correctly, the tutorial covers using the first swing in a combo as a diversion to make the enemy think you've missed, then once he's going for a counter attack, you hit him with the second swing.
In this example, I am always on defense. I did not go on the offensive and open myself up.
I do think you should be able to parry the second swing. But there is a small delay after missing a parry, and a broadsword combo is pretty quick, especially the stab. Not hard to miss it considering ping and general wonkiness that takes place in this game. I would have to see a video of it to really have a firm opinion though. Sometimes what you see and what the other guy sees are not the same thing unfortunetely.
To combat feints you parry late so their feint hits your parry anyway. But to com it those you have to parry earlier to get a chance to parry again.
