So... What's up with riposting?
I know that to do a riposte, you parry and then attack. For whatever reason, it never seems to attack any faster for me. However, when enemies do it, I seemingly take damage before they've even finished the parry animation. I can occasionally get the riposte to work, but it seems to only work with stabs. Is there something I'm missing, or are they just random? I know that connection plays a big part, but this is ridiculous. I often end up in 1v1s where they'll attack, I'll parry and attack, then they'll parry and attack, and this goes on until one of us hits randomly hits through the other person's block.

Also, what's the point of heavy kicking? I know it staggers people who are blocking with shields, but they recover just as fast (if not faster) as you do. All it seems to do, at most, is waste a little of both of your stamina. Is there a specifc follow up you have to do to be able to hit someone after staggering them with a heavy kick?

Riposte is very fast depends on which weapon you use. For example greatsword overhead riposte is very fast, shortsword stab riposte also very fast, spear overhead riposte is slow and predictable.

You know for heavy kick you have to hold kick buttom right? If you managed to heavy kick the enemy shield he will stagger for 2 seconds which is more than enough for you to chop their head.

Initiate the attack before the parry is finished. As the game queues up actions.

And it isn't exactly faster. All it does is initiate the windup instantly.

As was said above heavy kick will stun someone blocking with a shield for 2 seconds. Every single weapon in the game is faster than that by miles.

Thanks for the replies, I guess I'll have to figure out which type of attack can riposte the quickest with different weapons. And I'll have to try attacking before the parry is finished.

I'm not sure what my problem is with kicks then. I hold the key, they get stunned, and then put their shield up before my attack can land. I can hit them first about half the time in MW, and about 10% of the time in Deadliest Warrior. I don't know if DW is much different, but I can never seem to stun people with shields. I assume connection is part of the problem, but obviously I must be doing something wrong if I have such a low success rate with heavy kicks. I guess I'll just keep trying it.

They have to be holding their shield up when you heavy kick them to kick stun them. If they aren't then it acts like a regular kick, save for the fact you wasted more stamina.

I'm aware of that, and only use heavy kicks when enemies are playing overly defensively (such as blocking the entire fight, waiting for a teammate to show up.) Despite this, it still doesn't seem to do much.

Facehug range + latency + fast attacks = instant hits that require preemptive parries because this game favors the attacker.

Riposte used to work well. Someone attacked, you blocked and pressed attack quickly and it used to be fast. Now it just seems to be the speed of a normal attack.
