Chivalry 2 BETA review
So I've played Chivalry 2 over the weekend and would like to share my opinion as a long time Chiv 1 player about what's good and what's bad. Comment bellow to add to this list, so the devs can have a good feedback from us.

The good:

- still as fun as Chiv 1 (even more so tbh :)
- feels and plays like a true successor despite introducing new mechanics
- looks great
- runs great
- can get very immersive with the right people
- environments look realistic and have lots of details
- you can pick any object in the map and fight with it or throw it
- you can pick up any weapon from the ground even if it's not your class
- getting burned obstructs your vision like it should
- objectives are well designed and feel balanced
- classes now each have different specs and special abbilities
- added combat mechanics
- removed overhead spins, etc.
- healing mechanics add to the strategy aspect of the game
- sound design is on point
- team battles are bigger and more intense (32v32)
- the bridge fight is epic AF :)))

The bad:

- animations feel clunky and imprecise (apparently this is still being worked on)
- extremely laggy when servers were overloaded
- high ping even at 5 am
- blocking sometimes works 360 degrees
- blocking overall seems too op (casual friendly maybe?)
- lots of bugs overall, dissapearing weapons, etc.
- colors feel too bright and without contrast in some maps
- votekicking didn't seem to work properly

(btw, this is still only a BETA, so please don't get too emotional)

for me at least, the hold down blocking was an immediate slap to the face, the first step of chivalry's rhythm and foundation of strategy was thrown out the window for what I can only guess is an executive decision to simplify and "dumb it down" for console casuals... yet it all it does for subscribers to current models is add to a long list of things that confirm the whole world is doing the same, without respect to what can be called "working", integrity, tradition. the arts, writing, games, movies, when the bar goes so low no one will remember what was the point in the first place.

I understand completely where you're coming from, and I shared this opinion the first time I played it a while ago and gave them feedback on how this might not fly with most veterans of the genre.

Thing is the more I played, the more I understood how the meta was just different here and not necessarily dumbed down. I mean there's a number of extra mechanics like special attacks that will DESTROY a held block and force the enemy to lose his weapon due to complete loss of stamina.

I'm not too sure what you meant by the second half of your paragraph so I hope you can clear that up, maybe.

In any case I hope you all get to try the game and see how much potential it has. I myself am looking into different ways comp could have an evolution with this specific gameplay that Chiv2 has in mind. Even though I know A LOT of people will be upset about it, I will be posting my findings here, as well as other platforms such as our discord and reddit. Hopefully I'll have something great for you guys!

Game looks great just saw it today. Question i do have. Did they bring back the first person death cam? was so disappointed when they removed that from chiv 1

Speaking of which, we'd love to have you on the discord to share more about your opinions and concerns for the future, here's a link: https://discord.com/invite/chivalry2

We've recently (since beta) opened up channels for people to share opinions and feedback, which devs go through every week day to understand the communities wants and needs to try and release a fun and accessible game to many!

Hi please say you will be supporting private servers, thanks. All your servers were packed out at launch (a good thing). Ive got a lot of hours in chiv ;) and played some of Mordhau So i have to say well done on the combat. Wheres the brandi? xD

Fix the phasing/hit detection occasions and maybe nerf archers and ill be happy. You'll end up nerfing archers later might as well do it now.

Yeah as someone who is rank 53 over 1k hours, my concern is the fact that held block removes a huge aspect of the combat mechanics being able to feint someones block into a hit is a part of the rock paper scissors style of fighting I need. Reading your opponent is huge and I feel that Chiv 2 might have killed that.
it's still a rock paper scissor combat, if he keeps blocking just kick, if he kicks you just swing, if he swings dodge or block/counter.

the only thing i didnt like is the sprint, you can't sprint with shift anymore, it works like the game war of the roses where you speed up the more you walk, this removes the strats where you try to hit the guy with swings that goes behind the block, used to do this as a ninja on deadliest warrior

Overall the game has great potential, BUT the 1 major issue I have is BLOCKING.

Blocks can be "held" for around 10 seconds, slowly draining stamina.

Now this is easy to break with kicks or heavy hits and works fine on a 1on1.

The problem is fighting in a melee. Let's face it, we all want big epic chaotic battles. However if you face a group of people and one holds block as you swing though, you get interrupted, without enough time to recover from the people you didn't hit inevitably destroying you.

It's like using a nearby skill less player who holds block as a handy meat shield.
Except tactically it's far more effective than a shield :P

WTH they didn't have momentary blocks???? These would require you to time a block against the attack. Learning that timing is a skill and would allow the attacks to flow rather than being stopped by that one drooling kiddo in a group holding down their right mouse button.

Holding blocks are frankly imbecilic and takes the fun and skill out of large scale fights.
i like the block change a lot, games like chiv 1 and mordhau rn there are only sweaty players playing i don't want to sweat on games like these, they made a great great decision really good

I am totally won over by the game.
I also find that the decisions taken are the right ones but deserve adjustments.
On the other hand the community of Mordhau (already toxic with its own members) begin to swarm on the insulting servers everyone has everything, it's painful. :sefacepalm:

Man, the game is great. I wasn't hooked that much by a video game for a long time. Great community too. I will be playing on launch day. Hope to see more amazing maps as well.

The beta doesn't have all the content as they're specifically testing certain maps. You'll definitely be seeing more maps at the launch (and more being added over time after launch).

Yeah that's what i suspected :) I also hope the game isn't overly filled with MTX. But i have a positive overview about the devs and this game so i am definetly excited what's to come!

You can grind for gold in-game and use that or take an MTX shortcut if you don't want to wait. There's absolutely no pay-2-win.

Disagree blocking is too easy. Spamming is too easy and since you cant actually have weapon collision the attacker is favored heavily IMO. Blocking should take less stamina drain considering you can endlessly swing weapons while missing.

Some fallback points are not correct resulting in players being trapped and the auto balance can be annoying. Joining games as they are about to end kinda silly too. Otherwise Im enjoying sequel much more.

Game is fun, missed recent beta but sat in on quite a lot of twitch streams of chiv2.
You know as for these quirks , niches , intricacies and personal tastes in combat,
blocks, heldblocks whatever the list is long, types of weapon , class, faction.
none of it seems to matter to much as this sequel is more a public title then elite clan.
let alone the streams I watched simply verified the fact no matter if your a seasons pro
or a new to slasher melee type , "" You will end up just steam rolled over by 4 to 9 enemies
haha " , You can mumble to yourself's about this and that but your will be steam rolled
into the dirt regardless of status or class, skill. while your debating blocks in thought
while being steam rolled constantly your also be sniped at by archers or killed by a large
siege Arrow Gun, ballister, This game is what the masses wanted just fun with many players.

Played 40 man all day yesterday and it was a good solid mix. I dont like the 64 player matches and never have. Not even in other shooters. I think you get way better balance in 40 and performance is also much better. Stick to that if you get steam rolled all the time. You can always wander off the path and find the odd solo or so on the side and have some good duels.

Wrong store man. lulz.

Crappy, lazy devs are obviously free to use this forum for all their games, seems like steam doesn't care much.
