Controller support?

I am using an Xbox Series controller. I have played Hotline Miami 2 on the same PC with the same controller and it worked great. But Hotline Miami 1 seems unplayable with the controller.

In Hotline Miami 2, I could use the right stick to control the direction in which the character is facing (and attacking). Tilting the right stick in Hotline Miami 1 sometimes locks onto a random target, sometimes changes the direction the character is facing just slightly, or sometimes doesn't do anything at all.
