Was Pyromancer a poor choice for a psyker "blaster"?
So, having played the pen and paper game that this was based on, I decided to try and recreate the character I played back in the day in this video game. I picked Psyker, Pyromancer, and Officer.

Having now gotten a bit into the game (cleared Prison Planet, Navigator Station, and currently on the world that is rebelling), it seems I may have made a poor choice? All but like one of the pyro powers just focuses on Ignite and spreading the Ignite status to more enemies. Unless the burn DoT on said status REALLY goes up high as your psy rating increases, I'm not sure the damage is there?

Plus, most of the guides I'm seeing are for melee pyros who chose Warrior as their starter, and the game won't let you change that when you respec. Even with the Toybox mod there doesn't seem to be a way to do that.

The reason you see so many builds around melee pyro is that the new DLC released with 2 new melee archetypes, one of which was tailor made for pyro melee, it's the new thing.

The best archetype for pyro blaster is Soldier, the ability to allow for 2 attacks is almost essential. The level 4 psy rating boost is mandatory to not be weak for early game damage is calculated based on it. After that the first ability needs to be firestorm.

At this point you cast ignite on a tough target and then cast firestorm on them for a massive area of effect targeting everyone around them.

If you want further details look into CRPGBRO's recent god psyker build. Although it may be too overtuned, so if you don't want to break the game, use it for ideas and don't copy it completely, I would avoid using Sanctic staff, not like you need it. Arch-militant as your second archetype is more fun in my opinion.

Pyro has some nice combos, but they come online later. Power to trigger & increase all burning damage, power to spread the love (req. central target to already burn), feat to enable dot damage ticks being able to crit, and a feat which gives extra actions after a number of crits -> can really get the barbeque going..

If you want to deal big direct damage fire without a setup, there is a nice staff power iirc. but the psyker powers themselves (without combo) were not that impressive. However my info might be a bit outdated: the base damage for void burn was increased in the big patch, it used to be far lower in earlier versions and is supposed to be decent earlier now...

If you want a proper blaster psyker Telepath is your choice. People somehow misunderstand how dangerous telepath is in Wh40k.
But pyro can reinforce that playstyle for sure. It has some cool passives as well as molten beam.

Psyker damage dealers can be made to work, but you either find yourself a guide or start studying and experimenting to find out what harmonizes well. They do not build themselves like burst A-M.
I imagine that in some fights psykers are not all that great. I am thinking about those where you have barriers between psyker and targets or other circumstances that prevent fireballs from burning everyone. There are also warp manifestations which can ruin your day.

Pyro is by far the best dedicated "caster" https://youtu.be/3ERaUvVpCdI?si=GeqGQ9zoZ3wAdySx

it is also just the strongest psyker discipline in general...

pyro feels weak in the beginning because somebody at owlcat had the "brilliant" idea that its main mechanic is setting enemies on fire. thats what you would except from a "blaster"

but on the plus side, they buffed pyro psykers so now it feels actually usefull/powerful

Once you get Warp Surge Brooch, you will be fine.

Did I take a warp back into release? Pyro has been buffed so much it's the top background for almost every build now.

Pyro + officer/grand strategist usually means you end the combat before any enemy even acts.
