It's like usual adventure game, you need to find where to go and what to do. Game gives hints, like NPCs talking directly or indirectly.
Explore the manor when it becomes fully available and you'll find many items you'll need later. Do chores to get more hints.
Sometimes I was stuck too, but finally figured everything out without external hints.
As for the note of zero freedom. With all these things we first tend to try the "Most Freedom" approach but it ends up in the hands of testers who just keep on breaking things, so we end up limiting the gameplay. At first the rock worked from anywhere just by dropping it, but then people kept dropping important items to places where they could not reach them :)
I hope this gives you some insights to the struggles of being a dev.
