Bandit Barrier in Bank Heists

What's the purpose of that key pad in the security room of Bank Heists? I activiate it every time but it doesn't seem to make difference?

If the tellers hit the alarm it drops a metal barrier over their window, the button raises it

I see, thank you! Looks like the Bandit Barrier is even more useless now because the metal barrier protects the tied tellers from random ammo

I prefer to keep it down, swat can often get some shots through those little windows.

This. I generally give the tellers some leeway when I'm doing H&T so they can drop it.

I actually thought the Bandit Barrier affects the vault gates.
