Plus i'm not sure how many linux players continued playing after the Epic debacle. I guess I'd be pretty pissed if I were on Linux at the time that was happening. It was right before the release of the last heist in game too.

Also matchmaking runs trough Epic now, regardless if you're playing on Steam or not. Maybe the last Linux version is still using steam matchmaking; which can be forced, but barely anybody uses that option (unless it was removed).
If you're not playing it on Proton, like most people who are on Linux and still around here, then you'll be a on a different game version to everyone else, which is why you won't see anyone online.
I don't believe using -steamMM would help, since the game version would be different.
