They are not completely useless, but for the cost to make them decent, you would get a lots of solid skills.
I really hope they can make the technician to be something else than a 'tripmine and/or sentry guy'. There's just not enough space in his tree to put some good general use skills, because damn sentries and tripmines steal all the space. And your skillpoints.
An example: Watch Dogs Day 2
Place the sentry on the black pick-up trucks roof. Stand next to it on top of the roof.
As you look towards where the loot bags spawn the sentry has field coverage of both the center gate or fence, the right gate and the area between the cargo containers to the left, and the ground floor side entrance to the warehouse into the room with the light switch. Using the Thanatos or 308 take out the specials before they approach and leave the normal enemies for the sentry. One player with the sentry can cover half the map leaving only the far left gate to other members of the team.
