Police assault in progress (how does it work)
It's properly a dumb question, but how to stop it?
Is it only by murdering cops? Or are there something more to it.
Maybe something to speed their retreat up?
Any other useful info?

Thanks in advance friends.

Police assaults have a set timer, only way to "end" one prematurely is if there's a Captain Winters on the field and you force him to retreat by taking out enough of his phalanx members, after which the assault will always end within the next minute.
what? Jun 11, 2021 @ 11:47am
You either wait out the timer, or hope Winters spawns and kill him off.

There is a set number of cops that can spawn, though the number is ridiculously huge (because new-Overkill is genius at balancing numbers!) so it doesn't really matter.

The numbers are all Jules' fault, since he thought balancing the game around Goat Simulator of all heists was a great idea.

Okey, so it's purely a timer, if there isn't any captain involved.
And F*ck Jules. Got it.
Thanks guys.

Here's a video that's worth watching if you want to learn more.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=owVI6wz7590

Note: there's one part that's outdated and that's the part about using ICTV + Armorer to extend Fade for the max period.

I also disagree with the part about spawn camping. Lots of DSOD vets will tell you it's best to keep the enemies pushed back in their spawn so that they don't gain map control / make space.

If you're interested in the Assault Phase mechanics (which is recommended once you start moving up to DW/DS), this is a must have mod[modworkshop.net]

I very much appreciate the help.
I'll take a look at the video, and also the mod.
Thank you guys. All of you. You rock.

A note on Cap. Winters, just in case you haven't had too much experience with him - while he is present, the cops increase in damage resistance until a certain cap and the assault does not end, hence it ending if you cause his retreat.

Another important note is that if he shows up, you must wait for him to fully arrive (the shield icon next to the assault bar needs to appear) before starting to attack his phalanx, as causing him to retreat before he fully arrives will lock you in an infinite assault with no way to end it.

Is... Is that an updated/alternate version of Sora's Assault States mod with better features? Nice, I've been looking for a potential replacement for awhile, since I know that mod hasn't been updated in years and can be a bit cumbersome. I had no idea this existed, thanks for linking it.
I would just check out the Police Tasks & Assaults section of the Long Guide.

The TL/DR of it though, yes you can technically end a wave early. During the 'Sustain' phase of an assault there is a set amount of cops that can spawn, which is dependent on the difficulty and number of players. If you can kill all of the enemies before the timer runs out you can force a premature end to the phase.

In reality, it's practically impossible to do so since the spawn pool is so large (900 enemies at max diff with 4 players). Basically, a player would need to kill 225 enemies within 100 - 150sec for it to really matter.

There are other phases to an Assault which can be skipped but the majority of them have short durations, so it's not really worthwhile.

Here's what I don't get though. Why haven't they fixed it? Surely they could. And they know how much the players hate it. Why haven't they fixed the stupidity that Jules created?

I guess they never really had time for it, and there wasn't really that much traction over the years to change that particular thing, unlike, say, Sister of the Thorn in Vermintide 2 that was the booming talk of the Steam forums with videos popping up on and on.

I dunno. When your players hate something about the game so much that they curse the name of the guy who did it, it seems like you'd make the time to fix it. That's the sort of thing that earns player goodwill. Not making the time to fix it is the sort of thing that destroys that goodwill.

Jules had to be on that pack when thinking of the some of the balancing decisions. "huh sniper rifles are no longer useful and are struggling to keep up with the meta, maybe there are too many cops for single shot precision weapons to have a niche... ♥♥♥♥ no! we need to make sniper rifles double as explosives too!" Goofy as hell, especially the part where Graze has collateral damage just like explosives.

most people play at low difficulties where the downsides of Jules existing don't really impact the game, and even if they did, the mechanics of stuff like assault states isn't known to average players.

Everyone has kinda just... accepted this as the reality of the game, we never saw widespread outrage during Housewarming party or the skill revamp because the good changes outweighed the sneaky, bad ones.
Everyone ♥♥♥♥♥ on Jules (I mean I've criticised him in the past), but he did actually know game design, and while there were a lot flaws with his "improvements" I wonder how much was a push from above to make the game more a casual solo-friendly horde shooter, and Jules just not having the time to test out all the changes for long term effects.

In short, don't blame Jules too much.
