am I using sentries wrong?

Carrot mentioned sentries have a shield and are invincible to front attacks.

This doesn't appear to be the case. My sentries still get destroyed from front attacks. What am I doing wrong?

Don't know who Carrot is, but sentries are not invincible to front attacks. The shield makes sentries take less damage from front attacks. They take the full amount of damage from behind, so it's ideal to place sentries in a corner where their back isn't likely to get hit.

According the wiki, if the place where the bullet hits are on the shield, it won't take damage.

I tested this with friendly fire mutator, yes it's true, except for the suppressed variant. Shooting the suppressor will deal (probably) full damage, which is probably why your sentry gun are getting destroyed from the front.

I think the idea is that the hitbox for the suppressor on the suppressed sentries extends further out than the shield covers, so a lot of bullets simply end up hitting the suppressor part and breaking the sentry.

No, both of them have shield, but the suppressed variant's barrel (which is the suppressor) doesn't seems to get covered by the shield. Which makes it take damage from the front.

Fine, this time I tested it at proving ground in death sentence difficulty.

Spawning 20 green dozers, placing one regular sentries right infront of them. (almost point blank to make sure they deal max damage.)
Sentry gun has all skills, (except Third law, I will mention it in a bit) according to the VanillaHUD Plus' HP bar on Sentries, they have 250HP.
Green Dozer will do 560 damage per shot in death sentence.

Without Third Law Aced, it got destroyed pretty quick.
With Third Law Aced, it stays alive even after it run out of ammo. (Dozers did not attack sentry gun after it run out of ammo) Checking their HP after everything, full 250. (Yes, HP bar is working, with shooting both enemies and own sentry with friendly fire mutation)

Unless some of my installed mods modifies damage, (or bug) I think what I said is true.

If you still don't believe me, I will upload a video.

I didn't say I didn't believe you, jeez.
I did my own testing too. Seems like I'm too used to using suppressed sentry guns. Those get destroyed easily. Normal sentries are invincible from front attacks...
