Also with that Ping your desync will be really really really really bad.
also you could just play with bots offline and get bonuses cause youre playing with bots (for example 50% faster reload) if you play with bots you wont have ping issues as your ping is 0
in some cases playing with bots is more fun than with players
-toxicity, i dont really think this game is toxic, the toxic people are usually the ones that are super new and douchebag-y (people who think they know it all), but toxicity is pretty rare if youre not a ♥♥♥♥ and if you arent rude,
you host your own games, if you want to kick them you can, you can instant kick anyone in your lobby if you want to and if you make the game (free, only costs in-game money and is very cheap), there are cheaters but you should just kick them or leave their lobby,
-price if youre struggling on money, get the game for 1$ or 5$ when its on sale, and if you like it and want more content buy the legacy edition
I've played with bad internet, it's really not that much of a problem. Since the desync fixes in the past it's nothing like it was earlier on in the game's life for problems and even before then it could get wonky but was perfectly playable. Especially with a regular crew so you avoid any angsty teens who have learned new words and phrases to use online which is part of internet life. You can kick and even permaban people with your own personal list to avoid any real trouble makers so you can simply pretend they never exist and won't play with them again. If you play with someone who is geographically closer to you your problems will be greatly reduced as this game is player hosted with the others joining as clients.
This game has less problems with the "toxic" issues as it's PvE and a generally comfortable community (that's also pretty well run and moderated now, I think, but don't tell the mods). It's not as hostile or aggressive as many of the PvP areas can be. People mostly play for fun and don't treat it like it was work or a religion to get heated over and take personally.
There's the forum and subforums here for various questions and discussions, there's a discord channel and a subreddit (actually more than one, depending on the topic, IIRC). There's also an official website and youtube channel as well as some fan channels that support the game with good information and interesting challenges being done that can teach a lot and those youtubers also post on the forums here sometimes too.
There's a website that hosts a lot of mods you can find if you search for "payday modworkshop". Worthwhile once you get into the game to customise this and that.
Game works with keyboard and mouse, a controller or VR set up. All three of those types of players can play together in a heist/match too. KB&M or VR works best, but if you're feeling the need to be extra comfy then sacrificing better controls for extra comfort with PD2 can be nice sometimes, I guess.
PD2 has bots that can fill in for missing players up to a full team, so you can play solo offline, two players, three players or four players. You can also turn bots off if you don't want them. They do a pretty good job of support but obviously a good human player has that friendship and fun a bot can't have and can have more skill and cleverness with their help.
As for toxicity, I really think that only comes up when someone's hosting a stealth only mission and usually triggered when people are joining and not equip for stealth missions or not doing what the host thinks they should be. It's extremely rare to see a toxic person in a loud mission (aside from some new people who don't understand dodge mechanics and think someone's trolling them by not bringing armor).
The online community (outside the game) is truly one of the best! Everyone's trying to come up with new and interesting builds and strategies and I never see people hating on each other and there's so much help out there. For example, the streamer UknownKnight plays with his viewers and helps unlock achievements for them. To that end, if you're an achievement hunter then you'll be very happy with the ~1,500 achievements in this game haha
As everyone else mentioned, the game always goes on sale and there's no need to buy it at full price and this is also true for DLC (aside from the one DLC I wont mention cause we don't talk about that anymore lol). You can also play the DLC heists if you join someone else hosting it so you don't even need the DLC unless you want the other content in them or it at least lets you see if that's a mission you want to buy so you can host it yourself.
So YES, 100% worth buying! Especially now that they've committed to PD3 (which is being funded by PD2 sales) and they're continuing to release updates and content for PD2. For example, they're about to drop another heist and they just started redoing all the gun mechanics in a beta format that will slowly get implemented into PD2 to see how they want it to work in PD3. I very much love the way Starbreeze has been handling PD2 the past couple years, even if it is hype PD3 up, it gives more content and keeps us very happy :D (similar to Techland and how they're still updating Dying Light even though DL2 was supposed to be released last fall).
Oh my, I wrote too much, I'm sorry. I just really love this game.
The game has many desync countermeasures so you should still be able to play with people perfectly fine. I have suboptimal internet with the occasional lag spikes but PAYDAY runs without any trouble. People might zoom from time to time but that's to be expected. Honestly, just try and find out.
The community obviously has their bad apples but overall no. It is kind of a meme to be kicked without a reason immediately or kicked at the end of the heist but that's about it. If someone is toxic you can just ban them or leave their lobby and find another game.
Modding and cheating isn't a problem I would say. Again, you can just leave the lobbies or ban the players from your lobby. Before you join a lobby you can see what mods someone has installed. If a cheat's in there just don't join. Some players had it happen that someone joined and then gave them trillions of cash, if that happens, don't worry. Cash is basically useless anyway.
Only care what mods someone uses in active gameplay, else it's live and let live.
Plenty of content but it's not as massive a ball of spaghetti as some other games (like Warframe), it's more like a few pools that each go very deep (weapons, skills, perks, missions, etc.) but you don't need to engage with most of it until you're ready. After all, you can basically just find a build you like and you're probably set.
On a scale of 1-10 for community, I would give the Payday 2 community an 8/10 (pretty good), but its definitely a quiet game. Not many mic users or chatters and most people will leave after the match is over without even gging.
You can do stealth solo if needed and Jewelry Store, Bank Heist (gold, money, random, dep boxes) , Diamond Store and First world Bank, are great for learning the basics. They are not that difficult to pull off, but might requiere some time to learn. Jewelry Store and Ukrainian Job (almost a copy paste map) are the easier ones to stealth by far.
If interested I would try them in that order (If you do Ukrainian, try it after jewelry store, not before).
Even if you never touch stealth. The game is worth it
Edit: note the maps I mentioned are not stealth only and can be done guns blazing which is less punishing than failing outright as you can try to continue on loud if you want. There are some stealth only maps also.
Just do it! Just buy it!
I would get the Legacy Bundle to start, I think its around $20. Not sure when the next sale is going to be so it's at your discretion.
Just kidding. Game is fine and the community is okay.
