PAYDAY 2

Why do so many people cheat their achievements?
EDIT: In this discussion, I would prefer to MOSTLY focus on the people that cheat ALL or MOST of their achievements, more precisely, what do they think while cheating, what do they expect from cheating and what makes them cheat. And please, try to stay on topic, I don't want a discussion about "whether achievement locked content is good", but about cheating.

I've visited this forum quite often for the last few months, I've probably seen hundreds of threads by now, but ever since I came here, I've been encountering few locked threads a day, finished by a comment "OP banned for cheating achievements". What I know for sure, is that those banned people are just tiny fraction of the people who cheated their achievements, as many of those people have private profiles or don't post anything on the forum.

And here I am, wondering why. Achievements don't give you any real benefit, apart from the few easy ones that unlock DLC content, but majority of cheaters seems to not know about it. It doesn't show your skill and you can get banned for it. This just seems unreasonable to me.

Then there are the ones that unlock weapon mods. A lot of people complained about them when they got released, so I can see why people crossed the line but it still doesn't make sense to unlock everything.

Possible answers:

1) Some people don't feel like they should have to unlock content they've already paid for.
2) By appearing to be 25-100 they hope to not get kicked from games for being new. (This was before NGBTO) This resulted in most people presuming most 25-100's are cheaters anyway and kicking them regardless.

In some cases it's for the sake of completion- Maybe they got 95% of their achievments legitimately, but one achievement, a set of achievements, or the ones in the latest update/DLC are ones they can't be bothered to do and so they just cheat them.

Because some of them have weapon mods locked behind them I guess ? Or masks ? Or they want the infamy skill reduction ? That's my best guess, could be for any reason though. Maybe they're just lazy.

Well, some people are perfectionists, I know I am. I have the desire of unlocking all achievements but as a hardcore fan as I am, there are some achievements that are simply ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ **cough**Goat Simulator**, therefore I unlocked them because I do not support buying or even playing something that literally insults my intelligence. Ban me if you want.

Just because you don't want to do something or if it isn't your cup of tea doesn't mean you deserve it.

An example is an achievement for Super Meat Boy. It requires you to do all of the hardest levels in a row without dying a single time. It's extremely difficult, to the point where very few have it legitimately. It may take hours and countless attempts to even get near completing it.

For those saying that tossing in goats one by one is different because it's not that hard, or is something you've already done, well so is the achievement I mention. If I recall correctly, to unlock the trial to do it you would have already have completed the levels once already, meaning you are already have potential of completing it.

However, just because you know you can do and can't be damned to do it does not mean you deserve it.

Lol, how long? You can clear that on DW within 15 minutes.

So, I guess the goats outsmarted you ;)
If you are able to do the "Farmer Miserable" achievement within 15 minutes, then I think you are the one who cheats. ;)
I did farmer miserable in like less than an hour or so. Its the same as cooking 25 bags of meth or secure the righy engine for last. They are time consuming and they don't prove nothing special but its a nice challenge.

Ah. you're talking about that one. Seeing you weren't specific, I thought you ment just regular day 1;)

Still I don't see how this "insults you intelligence" nor how this justifies cheating.

Too late, the banhammer already dropped
Frankly, I've been tempted to "cheat" an achievement or two via the Steam Achievements Manager, just because they lock weapon mods I want and are a pain in the ass to get. Never really got around it it, though - seems like a lot of work to hook a third-party programme into my Steam account, and I ended up getting most of them anyway. The real kick in the teeth are the "four man" achievements, but I eventually managed to con persuade three of my friends into playing Payday 2. That took care of the worst offenders. I think I'm still missing something for the Assault Pack stuff. Probably frenading a Cloaker, probably something else. Can't be arsed to look.

NOoooooooo.

Just hit me up Mali. Happy to help out. Even with stealthy ones ;)
Sad they banned the guy. He actually had some valid points that should be considered. There is still achievements I will probably never do just because of how ridiculously nerve taxing they are. Cooking 25 bags of meth by example is not my idea of fun. When im done doing this I can tell you I feel bored as ♥♥♥♥ and when I finally unlock the achievement I realise I stopped caring about it after the 10th bag. Sad they banned him but rules are rules I guess.

Too bad. At least he was honest about it. That's more I can say of most cheaters.

You don't have to do the achievement you know, it doesn't even give you anything. Is it fair that I spent 1.5 hour in cook off while someone can just get it in one click so they can have a pretty achievment icon?

Anyone who is dumb enough to admit to cheating on this forum deserves to be banned lol.
In regards. Most people that cheats for their achievements are doing it for the following:

-Unlocking the mod(s) to that achievement (Butcher car/ak pack, Gage Sniper, Historical pack).

-Make themselves "Better" by view (Before Mods such as Inspect lobby, NGBTO, STC, and Lobby player info were really a thing and/or not very many people were using it) apon look over without going to deep into a profile for a 15-20 minute heist. Even though they might suck alot (Which can play off that "XXV-100" is just having a bad day. in the eyes of other players).

-Give them a false impression of "100%" a game where new achievements are added in roughly every month or so.

-A rare case of a buggy achievement that doesn't prok even if you follow it down to letter because of a bug from an update or 2

Back before Crimefest 2015 every point of accuracy, Stability, and Damage was almost hard earned either because you either got lucky in a card drop, Finally found that last gage package for mod X for your Weapon Y. In some cases (AK/Car pack) people are just lazy not to do it themselves and resort to using SAM to Unlock the achievment and thus "Aquired" their hard earned Mod(s) to boost their Car-4 or AK rifle even further then before.

But even if you do keep it for yourself. Maybe you want to unlock 1 or 2 achievos cause maybe you dont find a team or they are too boring but if you do don't say it around or at least not in the official game forums! Damn that guy could have avoid a ban. Oh well Darwin was right I guess.
Wow, I feel bad for Upstanding Moral Citizen. If you are reading this, I want you to know that your feedback has been appreciated.

I'd have to have a look at what mods I still have locked. My idea gaming experience is a perperual state of ignorance of achievements. I have the most fun when I pretend they don't even exist, because all they do is annoy me. It's why I can't stand to replay games which insist on shoving achievements into gameplay ala Bullet Storm. Good game but YUCK!

Oh, of course. I spent a lot of time pirating video games when I was younger before I found Steam and realised how much easier it is to simply own my games. I'm familiar with that sort of situation :) It's simultaneously disappointing to see someone constructive banned on the basis of cheated achievements, and also predictable. The mods here take achievements very seriously, apparently.

Again - stuff like this is why I feel that achievements are one of the worst things to happen to gaming. The very need to protect them fiercely lest they lose their meaning even though they meant nothing to begin with is why I don't think the system was ever positive for gaming. Especially not the way Steam handles it. Then again, it's easy for me to say since I literally do not care about achievements when they don't prevent me from using certain weapon mods...

I doubt it'll ever come to that, though. I'm too lazy to cheat achievements in much the same way as I'm too lazy to pirate games any more.
Because Overkill used to have pointless achievements for unlocking weapon attachments.
Here's a fun suggestion - unlock all achievement-bound mods for all players who own the specific DLC. Leave the achievements themselves in place for people who want them, but just let people have the mods directly. That way, you rob players of the ONE semi-legitimate excuse for cheating achievements and this is no longer controversial. When achievements mean nothing, then I don't have much of an issue with people taking heat for cheating them.
