Not overkill and no clue exactly how it works or even exactly what it does but googling gamesight shows they advertise themselves as GDPR/CCPA compliant and SOC2 certified.

Under GDPR every data acquired must be first opted in for being collected, and there must be an option to opt out any time. Otherwise, it's illegal.

From what I've read on their website, it essentially monitors how much a player spends on the game and also tries to learn if you play the game or not, so it can advertise to people who have never interacted with the game and avoid people who have.

AFAIIK this is the same company which previously offered a very similiar product named "Red Shell".

As per their privacy policy[console.gamesight.io], they collect from players:

Customers (refers to the company that pays gamesight, eg. overkill) that use our Services to track the use of their game will provide us with information regarding the characteristics and activities of their Players, including information regarding game purchase activity and in-game events such as DLC purchases. Gamesight obtains this information as a result of data being sent to our servers from our Measurement API in a Player’s game. The data stored by the API includes information such as hashed IP address, API version, anonymized User ID, timestamp, Developer API Key, OS version, screen resolution, timezone, system language, and in-game events. Player’s data collected by the Gamesight platform is presented to our Customers to analyze the performance of their marketing and the performance of their game.

Which they combine with cookie data, to make profiles of consumers:

We use various technologies to collect and store information when Player’s interact with our Customer’s or their partners web properties. This includes cookie technology to identify Player’s browser or device. We use these technologies to collect and store information when Player’s interact with advertising services. We use this information to provide attribution for our Customers which includes matching this cookies with devices.

I'd rather not get my data ("anononymized" or not) harvested by a 3rd party and used for their money making (and then eventually leaked because no one takes care of data security nowadays). Please remove this spyware.

Or atleast I want an option to disable it completely. (It is not clear if the current toggle for telemetry counts for this, and even so, one cannot be sure unless they monitor their network traffic.)

EDIT: when you boot the game up, it asks with separate checkboxes for both types. nevertheless, I do not like this a one bit.

when you boot up the game after the update it gives you a big info screen what all that is used for and lets you enable or disable the telemetry on that info box

I just had the opportunity to boot the game up, and yeah there it was.

Still I think this is a bad move from OVK, even if I trust them (btw, I do) that the checkbox actually works.

The checkboxes do work as advertised if you've looked at the code. It'd be blatantly illegal if they were still collecting data even if you've opted out.
