But saying the beta was the "good" version is a discussion of it's own. Personally I think the game had its prime around the deathwish update.
But you can downgrade your game version to virtually any update you want - some have crashes though but they are usually fixable - using built-in Steam console commands. Currently playing update 11 with a friend and we're having a blast.

If you have issues and need troubleshooting just ask me. For really old updates you probably will have to create a new save file, I needed to for U11.
