Snipers have the most damage per hit and are the most precise weapons so many players prefere them for big distance while LMGs aren't precise and have lower damge per hit (I think the lowest damage from all bot weapons) but they have the highest DPS because of the bursts and the giant magazine size and for closer enemy groups the precision doesn't matter so much.
All bot weapons, including sniper rifles and shotguns, are shooting the same normal bullets for the hit calculation. Shotguns are just visually different. Without the skill no weapon is penetrating anything. With the skill every weapon is ignoring shields and body armor. Since they are targeting the head the body armor doesn't make a real difference for them with a automatic weapon but in my opinion the shield penetrating is very usefull.
Enemies on Very Hard have little health, and since the RPK has fast fire rate and high-ish damage, they can shred through crowds of enemies
Bot 1: Thanatos
Bot 2: RPK
Bot 3: Izhma
I promise you, you will want them to equip weaker weapons, specialy if you play only up to overkill.
But regarding your question:
* You can equip bots almost every weapon except special ones.
* Weapon mods do not count for bot
* Bots have no ammo issues (you can equip even weapons that YOU would have ammo issues in an instant ; Like RPK or Thanatos ^^ )
hth
RPK doesn't have THAT bad of an ammo pickup maybe it did when you last used it but it doesn't anymore whenever I use it.
2) It's like the Akimbo Tatonka (smg), it's awesome up to overkill, but then (mayhem+) you DO get ammo issues.
2.a) I usualy play on Mayhem+ - where enemys eat more bullets until they roll on the floor with a full stomage :p
2.b) So I'd rather take the KSP.
