Linux Native = stutter, Linux Proton = silky smooth
Am I going insane ?
Is the stutter right now here in the room with us ?

I played with Proton and everything seemed smooth, but Proton version caused Payday to crash occasionally when loading someone else's hosted game, so I tried native linux and i ♥♥♥♥ you not i am observing microstutter. Vsync on, frames capped at 60 and my eyes tell me that is not silky smooth 60fps.
When moving mouse (camera) my eyes just get pain because that ♥♥♥♥ aint silky smooth.

Ok, seems like using native is pointless as some guides recommend using proton, lmao :emofdr:

Turn off Flush GPU on native. Counterintuitively, it fixes A LOT of stuttering turning it off.

Reminds me of a bug in Forza Horizon 4 whose solution is counterintuitive: The GPU could run at 99% and have sub 20 FPS even if I framecapped the game to 60FPS and the solution was to... enable vsync. I wish I was kidding, for some reason the 1060 went haywire on that game for that.

Will check the Flush GPU option off as well when this GPU goes to my Arch build.

Yeah, it is a bit weird.

Fair warning, most up-to-date distro's now require a version of Mesa not built against LLVM14 / 15 due to Payday 2 crashing, which is increasingly harder to find these days. The AUR likely has such Mesa versions to install, But if you want to have newer mesa, the current solution is to enable Zink, an OpenGL -> Vulkan conversion layer built into Mesa, as the graphics backend instead of OpenGL Put this in the launch options:

env __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=mesa MESA_LOADER_DRIVER_OVERRIDE=zink GALLIUM_DRIVER=zink %command%

This also allows you to continue using up-to-date Mesa, as well as letting you use the Native Linux port. Note that there may be some performance issues on certain heists (weird spiking in GG Casino's vault, but that's not exactly the poster child for PD2 heist performance anyway).

If you want to run Mods, use
env __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=mesa MESA_LOADER_DRIVER_OVERRIDE=zink GALLIUM_DRIVER=zink LD_PRELOAD="$LD_PRELOAD ./libsuperblt_loader.so" %command%[command]
(former) Linux user here, been playing Payday 2 with Linux for a while. Just came on here to ask Overkill about an ETA for when Linux builds of the game would be fixed. With the save syncs not working, and the new heist not working either, something tells me that Linux is about to suffer a "Winds Of Change" style death.

It's awesome to see that this game works well under Proton, and I'm about to try it on my own. Before I do though I wanted to ask: do you need very high-end hardware to run this game under Proton? I've got a laptop with a Haswell i7 and a GTX 960M that I play this game on. While Payday 2 itself should work on this hardware no problem, I'm wondering how the Windows >> Linux translation impacts performance on older or slower PCs.

Thanks in advance.
Personally I just switched to Proton and havent had problems at all. I think many devs now abandon native Linux work (unless the project had linux build from day 1), because Proton literally solved their problems.

Original creators of wine are saints, its a miracle everyone can use this tech without a fee.

You're not gonna get an answer to your question by the devs on here, and the new heist isn't gonna be released until at least late May-June, so they have some time to fix it. Part of the reason they told us Linux folks is to make us aware of their situation, which is something they don't normally do, and for once, I'm willing to believe they want to fix it. They're not usually this chatty when it comes to Linux things.

Save syncing does still work; you literally rename linux_save098 to save098 for Windows, and vice versa for Linux. I'm not kidding; it's that easy[modworkshop.net]. They basically tried to make their own save slot for Linux, which was a very odd choice. I did ask Payday twitter man about this, and they said they'll look into it.

As for performance, I've heard rumblings of nasty memory leaks on specific versions of Proton, and sometimes it'll crash after playing a heist or two due to memory issues, but other than that, I don't think it'll run any worse than Native, or windows for that matter.
