Space Marine 2: Co-op Matchmaking
So I've been super keen on buying this game for a while now, but from my understanding, the experience is highly altered depending on whether you're playing the game alone or with friends (with the majority seemingly recommending you play it with friends...)

My questions: Will the campaign still be as enjoyable even if I don't have friends to play with, or does the experience solely revolve around it?
Then also, if the game is leaning more towards a co-op intended experience, is there then such a thing as public matchmaking in the game, or is it only per invite?

the main campaign is fun and enjoyable, on the more difficult settings it might be a little much for one player. if you are looking to play with friends you might run into the issue of crashing and having to reset connection after every mission or your friends loosing connection in the middle of a mission. thats about it.

yes, as a singleplayer campaign it is just a bit worse than average. If it is the only thing you are planning to do in game - game is not worth the price, wait for a big sale -50% or better -75%. 6 hours of content, that is clearly made for multiplayer experience, meaning it is just not on par with many other singleplayer games, because of sacrifices you have to make (load times, you might even experience lag in single-player, your two companions are two stupid bots etc, even animation, cut scene quality probably took a hit. It is good mostly, but could be a lot better as a single-player game)

Did you play Space Marine 1? If you played SM1 you probably come in expecting a game more similar to Gears of War with a great story, heavy animations, mechanical precision and control. Instead we got Vermintide 40k, which is not necessarily a bad thing but it's definitely not what a lot of us expected and might feel a bit flimsy and dumb at first but it's actually alright once you get used to it. PVP and the Campaign is honestly garbage. It's mostly about Operations mode which is a coop survival mode. You can compare it to Left 4 Dead if you're not familiar with Vermintide. There's a voice chat in the game and it's quite easy to find people to play with even if you don't have any friends to play with. In Operations you can also level up your weapons and remove a lot of the issues that comes with the vanilla versions which will enhance you experience overall. This is not doable in the Campaign which is partly why it feels terrible.

I'm in fact on the verge of finishing Space Marine 1. I mainly got the game for some context before jumping into nr. 2, and also just get a feel for the 40K lore / universe in general. So far I've enjoyed nr. 1, even though it's obviously dated, but I think I understand what you're saying in terms of the campaign in regards to nr. 2.

It's now kind of starting to give WWZ vibes, in which the campaign also felt lame, but the horde modes were quite enjoyable. Seems to be a similar case here from what I can tell. The developers seem to thrive off of a more sandboxy / chaotic experience, rather than a narrative focused one.

Going to finish nr. 1, then I am thinking to give nr. 2 a solid chance.

No it wasn't necessarily a bad thing... it was a disasterous thing. The worst thing that could've possibly happened to this "sequel".

Also. This thread. Where were you guys the other week when I was getting ganked by the "10/10" geeks ? Thought I was the only one who thought that this sub par crap was actually sub par.

Campaign is short and sweet. Most of the "game" is PVP or PVE Ops. I would recommend a group for Ops and PVP.

I played the release version and the campaign was beyond painful because the bots were utterly stupid to the point I quit it.

Revisited it now after months and I have to say, a bunch of the extremely bad polish got fixed and the bots are actually doing something now like using abilities.

Still stupid its invite-only though but at least the bots are more competent now and not plot-armor statues doing virtually nothing. Yay.
