It makes developing the coop aspects easier, things start to get harder the more players you add to the mix for balancing, game design and gameplay...

Nope, 3 is good, it's less forgiving for player's unability to play with each others and also allow you to have more strengh by yourself. It's easier to carry teams for experienced players and harder to be too much of a dead weight too, as you have only 3 slots, so you really should be at least better than bots (some players aren't).

I feel like 4 different classes all in one Coop mission would make the game hella unbalanced and probably less fun as they'd have to compensate with higher enemy health or bigger swarms or less ammo etc.

Haven't played online yet, but always found 3 players in almost every other coop games to work much better than 4.

they wanted to make small levels so they cut out the 4th man. its that simple. if they were going to do 4 they would have had to make the levels bigger

But it seem everything design from the ground up to be 3.
