Scoped version is semi-auto and SMG is auto. Both are terrible I'm leveling them now lol
Scoped carbine is much better for single target damage than the SMG, it's also surprisingly effective at crowd control especially if you get the kraken penetrator rounds. I use the damage variant in the relic tier and I've had good success with it, don't use the SMG though it's not very good and takes too many shots to execute any elites.

It starts getting really good in the artificer tier but like most bolt weapons it's fairly underwhelming in mastercrafted and standard issue.

I think it's after the Stalker Bolter and the Bolt Sniper. Better at CQC to mid range while the stalker is MID to Long..

Oh I wouldn't use it on my Sniper, for Tactical it's really good if you want a jack-of-all trades weapon but I exclusively use the las fusil for my Sniper because of how good it is at picking majoris targets.

Just finished leveling them and they were pretty much the worst guns I have ever used in a game period the SMG being the worst of the two imo.
All bolters are really underpowered in this game for some reason

Personally love both variants.

Marksman fills the role of a mid range DMR. able to handle anything below Majoris without issue and without remorse and against Majoris and higher does just fine, stalker, bolt and las will down a single entity much better naturally but i like to play my sniper as a versatile mid-ranger with high clutch capacity whilst maintaining some level of its original purpose of Elite target disposal. Stalker is too slow, bolt and las are not fit for purpose for the role of mid range support.

Sometimes i go auto-carbine when there is a heavy, run ammo variant and do anything i can to keep stuff of my allies feet. otherwise im usually between them and the elites or backline ranged.

I really like the scoped variant.

The okayish damage lets me chip away at majoris engaging my melee brothers to help bring them to executable quick.
And he relatively large ammo capacity allows me to clear the minoris swarming my brothers without feeling the sparse and far more powerful shots of the bolt sniper or las fusil are being wasted.

I agree that bolt weapons overall are way under powered relative to lore status.
