Nobody on here can speak with any kind of authority or give you any kind of answer that will be satisfactory. I can say, the CEO selling his shares a week ago is going to be a huge problem for him, but one guy getting into deep dung isn't going to change what's happening to the developers.

To be honest, the way they have their current contract is pretty outrageous, there is far too many ways to exploit it, the fact they want to charge by download and don't distinguish it by purchases (meaning people that delete a game for space and install it again later will charge the company twice) is....well. To be honest, a lot of law is behind what technology is currently capable of, and so without a precedence, it's a grey area. I'm not a lawyer though, but its going to be a pretty big upheaval in the interim.

As Raven said no way to give a definitive answer, only speculation. I'm not a lawyer nor a business leader so my answer is going to be speculation from a nobody.

My guess is that Unity is going to get far too much push back from big end developers that aren't happy with the change to the point they have to drop that aspect of the change. There has already been a walk back on the counting re-installs for the charge and I imagine the whole thing will probably go because there is far too much grey area+sketchiness in terms of tracking installs on devices that devs won't want to accept.

some quick useful links (if steam allows them to be posted), there is some damage control attempting to be done and trying to fix some of the rather BS wording in the initial claims:

looking more into it, This game itself is most likely not in trouble. The people mostly concerned should be indie devs, a company like capcom can just pay the 2k a year to upgrade the service fee and have no issues with costs.

That does mean we're probably never going to look at any updates, but I don't think anyone here was counting on that in the first place.
so what's this about?

Always wait a week or two on e drama. It is never worth fretting about.

There's no telling whether it will even go through. This reeks of Todd Howard's "it just works" where the code people do their best but can't possibly live up to what the suits want them to do, and it can't be released in a broken state to be patched up by modders because duh.

Devs using unity gotta pay 0,20 cents per download should the game sell over 200000 units within a year.

There's no way for them to keep track of this unless they start using DRM that makes Denvo look lax by comparison.

Unity merged with a company which created malware in the past, so...
Looked into this, Unity is being stupid. This is just another investor wanking scheme through nickel and diming their developers.

Funny how a couple of days leading this announcement coming out, top executives at Unity sold their stocks.
