Joystick support and joystick mapping
I have a Logitech Freedom 2.4 wireless joystick, and I really love flying in other gams - but I have huge problems with getting to flying in this game.

First of all, I cannot find any profiles in the Logitech Gaming Software for this game. And even if I did, I don't think it would work, would it?

I have tried "mapping" the joystick inside the game but everything always ends up in a fast crash. Sometimes immediately when I start in a plane it just goes wild rolling - and then I crash. What can I do?

If there are other people using joysticks here, how did you do it? How did you map your x-axis, y-axis, left, right, ascens, descend, pitch, yaw, roll etc? This is my MAIN problem - no control at all!

There is no way I'm going to pilot anything with a mouse or keyboard, so I hope this will be fixed or that there might be some other joystick old-skoolers like me out there who can help me.

Grew up with the X-Wing/TIE Fighter series and l thought I finally found a game for dogfighting like that again ... *sob*

I use this to fly:

http://www.logitech.com/en-us/product/gamepad-f310?crid=713

And this is how its mapped:

I use an Extreme 3D Pro + CM Xornet Mouse for Infantry. I have been thinking about setting it up for flight, with roll on the handle twist function. It feels like it might work; then I could fly one handed.

I drive with the mouse and keyboard.

There is a problem with Logitech products that if its plugged in when you start some games, it goes crazy and wildly spins. I have that problem with Borderlands and Borderlands 2. (even though I use mouse look and no 'look' function is bound to the joystick) When that happens, I have to wait until Im actually in game to plug it in....then its fine.

Also, sometimes I have to vigorously wiggle the joystick back and forth. It likes to get stuck on 'A' (or left) and W (or forward) Same applies to the analog sticks on the controller.

I didnt actually have to map keystrokes to the joystick either. This is the first game that recognized the joystick's button presses and joystick action without any keybinds set in Logitech's profiler. I just bound it all in game, with no profile loaded whatsoever. Best of all, it recognizes BOTH the Joystick and Controller, so I can swap back and forth as I go from Pilot to Infantry. You can even bind both of them to the same flight functions for example.

SOE did great when it comes to Joysticks/Controllers IMO.

Thanks for the detailed info. I'm thinking about moving to Joystick or gamepad for mosquito flying and wasnt' sure that the gamepad would be worth it.

Your welcome :)

If you play a lot of flight sims, you might do better with the joystick. If you grew up on console games like I did, (like Star Wars Rogue Squadron, Battle for Naboo) then you might be better off with the controller. So far the controller does best for me but Im going to give the Joystick another shot.

Thank you for your answer about the Logitech joysticks and for showing how you mapped your gamepad. I am still a little bit confused about how to map an actual joystick though.. Grunt with Top Gun dreams..

i use just a cheap thrustmasters joystick to fly, as long as windows recognizes it, it should work in ps2. the problem i had how ever is the ingame sensitivity just doesn't do the job. so i use DXTweak2.exe this little gem sorted the sensitivity issues out for me.

My sticks are working in windows and other games, but I do not even find an option menu to select one. keybindungs don´t work either.

bump? Anyone got an idea what is wrong with the joystick support?

quick question on the same subject
last time i flew was early beta and stopped because joystick support was lacking

did they make joysticks better or is it still a all or nothing system?

Sorry Hardwire, I have no idea, I can not even get the joystick to work with ps2

I can't get PS2 to recognise the throttle on the X56 so at the moment I'd say Joystick support is still lacking

Wow. A blast from the past. I thought it looked familiar when I started reading it, and there I was 12 years ago responding.

I would not expect any further joystick support from the game. You'll need to map your controller or joystick to keystrokes. Even the old Logitech I had could map a key and then use it as a throttle. Whatever your model is, theres almost certainly a way. Its been a decade since I used anything but a wheel for racing titles (The Crew was the last one, for perspective so dont as me 'how' LOL) The tech was there 12 years ago and Im sure it hasnt gone away.

Also a big thanks for taking me all the way back to 2012, when the game was still fun. The recent Sunderer update was so absurd that I just quit playing. Game was on a major decline from the best times ~2014 anyway. Sad, but we (long time veterans) all knew this time was coming.
