This isn't a set fight like in COD or BF with a set number of players on each team. The entire thing is just one big sandbox of FPS, ground vehicle, and aircraft gameplay. The player counters stop at 48+, but there's nothing stopping you from having everyone in one fight. Last night there was a number of fights with around 96-144 v 96-144 players and in other parts there was fights with 12 v 12. You can get a decent tell of the number of players in an area from the population % graph but not exact numbers saddly.
You're also able to choose where ever you want to fight, when to fight, and almost what to attack at will. The only limits on taking a base is that you need a link to an owned base to cap one. The links are shown on the map. But if your owned base isn't secure as in the cap point yours and no timer, then you can't turn the linked bases cap point from the contested base. This makes fast moving small teams great for getting behind enemy lines to flip a point and stall an entire attack or give your team time to make a massive push.
Most fights tend to cap at 3-4 platoons on each side. 48 players per platoon, up to 3 side in a fight. Fights bigger than that do happen, but the map just isn't that great for that many players and some outfits (clans) go else where for smaller fights or to take advantage of undefended bases to do a bit of trolling to the enemy.
