Easiest to start with is Engineer, while you work on your Medi tool. Once you got your Meditool at max level you basically have your Engineer's support capabilities and your Medic Support to help you make cert for whatever you want and figure out what you want to invest in.

y started as a light assault and it was awsome
try them al out and pick one you realy like and switch to other classes if needed
With a shield bubble medic you can easily hit 30000 sph (XP per hour) without any boosts if it's a good fight. Also so note that Medics and Engies are far form theethless, Engies have the same carbines LAs have and Medic assault rifles are the best allround guns in the game. Both classes can equip SMGs and shotguns as well.
That was my main reason to suggest them. They are the easiest to earn certs with, and don't require much additional knowledge or even cert investment to earn.
With Light Assault i feel like you'll almost need a better carbine, at least as NC and the first couple levels of jump jets should be available already. Ideally having 2 bricks of C4 and a flash bang or a smoke grenade.
With Heavy... at least the NC heavy needs at least 300 certs in the Gaus before it gets even an option. Of course, once you outfitted your Gaus you can start earning and owning.
Learning the game as Engy, getting the med tool for easy rez... its an exp earner that will benefit any new player in the long run, because sometimes you just need a Medic.. or an Engineer... its a team game, and sometimes it feels like no one wants to play support.
I can confirm this. I am playing a "battle Medic" as Main class... and i wouldn't trade my Assault Rifle for anything.
I can also recommend Grenade Bandolier on the medic but don't bother with revive grenades. Since they shortened the spawn timer (you respawn faster on your last spawn) they're not that good anymore (unless you really need them for a group effort to hold point). I usually get better results with multiple frag grenades.
However if you want to be really fast Adrenalin Pump might be for you (also it's cheap, just 30 certs) - 10% more running speed might not SOUND much, but it can really make the difference (saved my life on the last pixel of health countless times) especially when you carry a shotgun.
Engi is a fun one when you find yourself in a convoy. However, I personally find this boring.
The Sniper is my favorite class though. I like to lone wolf it and cap bases alone or with 2-3 other friends. You are squishy but it's fun. Certs come slow unless you are a dead aim (I am not) but you can rack in some points off assists.
Personally, it depends on your play style. Each class is some what balanced and has a role. I stalked* your profile and saw that you have 500+ hours in TF2. You could really just choose your favorite role in that game and bring it over. You should have a fun time.
Good luck.
Ideally, you should observe the battlefield and figure out what your team needs the most. Engineers are usually the most needed, in my experience.
In any sustained assault or defense, you'll need a bunch of engineers to keep the lead flying, rockets launching, maxes maxing, and tanks tanking. This is how gunfire sounds to the engineer:

The advantage of never having to complete a respawn cycle is completely nullified if you have to run all the way back to your spawnpoint to resupply. In fact, it's worse - if you just respawn instead of revive then you'll spawn with full equipment but if you revive and you're out of ammo, you have to walk twice the distance if there are no engineers there to keep you supplied, and your team's sundie placement may not allow you to return. Then there's also the fact that engineers can deploy cover in the form of MANA turrets, whose shields soak up damage like there's no tomorrow, and how they can deploy both AP and AV mines.
Light assualt and infiltrator are useless classes unless you're some MLG god who knows how to use a light assault. One or 2 infils are helpful with the radar thing, but other than that they're just used by people who don't really care about the game(they just kill people from far away, and the people they kill will just get revived by a friendly medic, keeping them in the game). Cloaked SMGs are just pointless because you can do the same with another class and you have to get close, meaning you can be seen even while cloaked. Might as well use a light assault to flank.
If you think you might be into driving tanks I would cert out an engie(repair tool, tank mines, and AV turret) instead of medic then start dumping every cert into your main battle tank(vanguad, magrider, or prowler). AP is the way to go if you're not a prowler, heat and AP are both really good on a prowler.
Your view on Light Assaults is peculiar, and wrong in my opinion. I am by far no MLG god, but i do manage just fine as Light Assault. Knowing when to break out the Light Assault does require the ability to read a battle, however.
As for the cloaked Infiltrator with an SMG, that is just plain wrong. With proper positioning and a little bit of discipline you can become the most annoying person for the enemy. No other class can sit in a corner, watch 2 guys run past him and then take out the 3rd one that felt totally save because his two buddies just went by the infiltrator without seeing anything.
It does require quite the investment into the Infiltrator class, especially the cloaks, but that can be said for all the classes in my opinion.
And we can argue about the usefulness of the Heavy Assault. There are enough threads all over the internet asking if they are only useful as mobile rocket launchers, and those questions exist for a reason.
I concur however with the Snipers. Only time i am breaking out my Longshot is when i am feeling like no F's given and just wanting to kill some people. Camping doesn't do any good in this game. But there are other guns in the game for a 'sniper' that can be used on a closer range to much better effect. Of course one could argue that you might as well play a Heavy Assault with a Battle Rifle, but the Dart Gun is amazing, if you certed into it, for an assault. Just like the motion sensor is great for point defense.
An Infiltrator can very much be played as a benefit to the team (and to ones self, for the cert gain is much better that way, at least in my experience)
