And no Planetside 2 is not pay to win, in may not seem this way just starting out, but your starting weapons are some of the best in class weapons avaiable for each faction. The ones that you can get do out class them in some areas but the starter weapons are the some of the best all round weaposn that you can get.
To be better at the game. Play your class. For engineer, invest in the repair tool, drop ammo for people, fix vehichles and MAX units, deploy your turret and hold a position.
The game isn't about kill count. It's about tactics and cooperation.
Focus on suit slots, utilityies, etc early game instead of buying weapons. (tips resto kits are a nice forgiving item however when you can get tank mines and claymores, upgrading is not very high priority but is recommended on tank mines mainly to cover the width of most roads, and yes all mines stay there when placed, intill you log out or place more e.g you cannot place 2 if you have only upgraded once with AI mines however if you ahve upgraded you cannot place free same with tank mines the old just dissapear)
Your AI turret is not the greatest, AV turret is a worthy investment in my eyes, however intill then place down your AI turret so that you and your team mates can use it as cover, you cann also use it get up to some sneaky locations as you can jump on it. Or you can distract enemies with it or place it down in a hallway even if your not on it, most new players will stay away, though not all remeber. It also has an awful cone of fire, bursting is required aim goes to ♥♥♥♥ quick, allthough not like it was good to start with. I do not recommend putting certs into the AI turret to reduce heat, unless you find your self in situations where you would of lived if you had a bigger bar/quicker cool down often.
As for builds, you will not be able to focus really early on, however I recommend the grenade bandoilder suitslot, atlast LV4 or up flak and nano. Under rank four is not really worth it.
However the suit slot is a personnel thing, use the best for your playstyle after you find your prefered.
TR have alot of vertical and horizontal recoil, I recommend praticing in the warp gate or someplace safe on recoil control, to find your guns recoil pattern simply aim down sights and hold your trigger without bursts or recoil control. Look at bullet holes, this can also be usful for knowing when to burst. Say the bullet holes go up and to the left when firing drag your mouse down to the right to recoil control.
You may also switch to your ammo box by holding out your turret and pressing B.
general tips
You are not a god, take it easy one enemy at a time do not engage 4 enemies as one lone engie, if you can help it.
Check your minimap know where enemies are!
Keep low, only shoot when you need or people will find you very quickly.
If a group of enemies do not notice you feel free to take out one, or perhaps two, then proceed to run your arse off in the opposite direction.
Keep on moving. Killed a guy? Do not stand still and tea bag him use your legs and keep moving you just shew up on the minimap, they're after you. Whether you run back form where you came from or head further into enemy lines will require you to know the situation and where enemies may or may not be, this will come pretty naturaly the longer you play, though it does not help to speed it up. You can see allies on the minimap i find it helps if you pretend you are an enemy and you just killed one and then think about where the best place to run would be.
Positions:
An escape route [REQUIRED]
An easy escape route [GOOD BUT NOT REQUIRED]
Cover [GOOD BUT NOT REQUIRED UNLESS YOU INTEND TO BE THERE FOR LONG AND/OR THE ENEMY KNOWS YOU ARE THERE]
Not easy to flank [USEFUL BUT NOT REQUIRED]
Vantage point (height advantage, etc) [DEPENDS]
^ Depends what you wishto use your position for and where the enemies are and if they ahve noticed you.

THIS.
You can look at the stats of every weapon available for every class and if you go to the Virtual Training world you can even try every weapon with every addon for every class. Once you start comparing weapons you'll notice that the varients are so minor that it's almost pointless to buy new weapons. I've been playing for about 2 weeks now and I've managed to unlock all sorts of stuff without spending a dime. The only weapon I've unlocked was a bolt action sniper rifle for the VS scout since the semi-auto version is a lot less powerful than the bolt action. Otherwise I can't think of any reason to unlock other weapons.
