this video helps me explain the length of how long it took me to download https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J6mn57hPUHc

The explaination here is quite simple: It's an FPSMMO. Meaning it's a BIIIIIIG game. Oh, and here's the best part: it's only gonna get bigger as time goes by. So if download time is that much of an issue for you, here are some tips:

1. Upgrade your hardware

2. Get better internet

Simple, no? If yes, then quit complaining. If not, then why are you even playing this game? Oh, and just an fyi: the Steam downloader is outdated, so it only downloads the base files essential to the game. The launcher is where you download all the patches and stuff. Have fun with the next patch!

so you mean that the 9 gigs download for the game when you decide to try it is totally normal to be followed by another 9 gigs download from the "updater"?

scew that! it's totally insulting to the people who have limited bandwith connexions who have to say: "alllright, 9 gigs is enough for my gaming for the rest of the month"
and don't say "upgrade to a better connexion" cuz it's not everywhere that you can get unlimited internet...

the time that the download takes is not the insulting part, it's the fact that when you think you're done, you're downloading the same amount all over again!

I agree its total ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ just say at the start that the the game is not 9Gigs but instead 17Gigs i got all excited when the first download was done only so it could start again

@Jean - I disagree when you guys say it's total bull**** that it takes a long time to download the game. Like I said in my initial response, it's a big game and if you're too impatient to wait for the download, either upgrade your hardware or internet, or step away from the game.

@Mishotaki - No, you're right. Not everyone can afford unlimited internet... or better hardware for that matter. But it changes nothing that I have said previously.

The files you download from steam are old, and so when you launch your ps2 launchpad it downloads the latest files/updates/patches for you. Since this game released a long time ago you missed a lot of updates.

If you're internet is capped, chances are you should rethink gaming as a hobby, especially online gaming. also 10-20 gig for a game isn't exactly huge, and it certainly shouldn't take 4 hours to download, unless you happen to have a faulty internet connection.

What exactly is "fine" for your system? Specs would be nice.

I am having the same problem, Where I come from I have no fast internet and we have caps on our data usage.

So, I left Steam to download planet side 2 overnight (yes my internet is slow), was looking forward to playing it today, nope.

I basically have to re-download the entire game through the launcher. Going to be another overnight job. :(

Some very rude people in this thread don't understand why this is a problem, getting better internet isn't as easy as calling an ISP and saying "I want faster internet".

"Rethink gaming as a hobby" because I have a data cap? screw you buddy. I can do whatever I want with my data.

Okay, you didn't mention ram, I'll assume 4-8gb at least. Your card is kind of okay, it's about mid price for cards, however your motherboard doesn't have the best connection for it, think your board's best is 2.0x16 pci express slot, which you have two. That would cause you to run a little worse, but i don't think it'd be too terrible. Your CPU is good, except that AMD doesn't really excell in Planetside 2, because of how multithreading is handled in the game. You would've been much better off picking up a intel quad core with about the same clock speed and you would see an improvement.

Well, I don't know about where you live, but almost every ISP I've heard of doesn't have a cap on data, at least not Cable, Dsl, or Fios. You can do whatever you want with your data, at least until you hit your cap. I'm just saying if you really enjoy playing games online, you might want to look into finding an ISP that doesn't have a cap. Actually you could try talking with your ISP and see if they could maybe offer you a deal or something to help you out, no need to be hostile at me though.

Interesting the only internet in my city has data caps of either 150GB or 250GB a month, and the fastest net I can get is only 8Mb/s down, 2Mb/s up (This is because the city gave one company the only rights to put net infrastructure) So I end up with like 600KB/s Download rate max with a data cap of 250GB a month... and no other options of ISP

And this up til like 3 months ago, I was only getting 300KB/s max download, and 150GB a month, now paying like double for just about double the net

I live in Australia, data caps are a very common here and pretty much completely unavoidable, Does this mean everyone in Australia should stop downloading video games?

This whole problem could be avoided if the steam mirrors actually had somewhat up to date files available for download.

I'm limited to an ADSL connection and my modems sync speed is 5MB. (believe me, I would do dirty things for a better/faster connection) On a good day I can download at about 550Kbps.

I'm just annoyed that downloading the game off of steam is a total waste of time.

Please don't think I'm being hostile towards anyone, I'm far from being hostile towards anyone.

Also having a PCI-E 2.0 with a 3.0 card plugged into the slot will make NO difference in performance. No need to spread false information about that.

In the future however when GPU's are capable of completely saturating a PCI-E 3.0 slot, yes you would be bottle-necked by using PCI-E 2.0.

Where I live, no data caps, and I have currently 15mbps download with 1.5mbps upload. Which usually means I'm getting anywhere from 1mb/s to 2mb/s when actually downloading something.

Sounds to me like Australia is a bit behind the times with their internet, you could try looking around at different ISPs and see if they offer a no cap service. I don't see how you could reasonably play an online game with 550kbps, you must have really bad ping and latency issues.

The problem isn't the steam mirrors, it's the fact that it just downloads the base game, not all the updates. So it looks like you're downloading the game all over again, when really it's all updates.

I said it could hamper things, I didn't say it would as a fact. You're right about current gen GPUs don't utilize 3.0 fully yet.
