PlanetSide 2

PlanetSide 2

Any similar titles that involve wide battles?
After playing most modern games and coming back to Ps2, it feels so insanely wonky. The sensitivity is all sorts of weird and the game is incredibly choppy.

What are some similar titles that are more updated?

Obviously the Battlefield and Battlefront series. Then there are the more realistic games like Hell Let Loose, Post Scriptum and the ARMA series. Nothing is really like Planetside though.

I've heard that Insurgency is a good alternative, but I've never played. Looks pretty cool though

There really isn't anything on the market that offers what Planetside 2 does. If you're JUST looking for shooter battles with large numbers of players, Battlefront 2, any of the newer Battlefield games, find an ARMA server with heavy population I guess.

The closest thing I can think of to Planetside 2 that offers the same level of Infantry + Ground/Air Vehicle territory control stuff would be the Theaters of War mode that the Star Citizen devs are currently working on as a testbed for large-scale battles and combat balancing for the MMO, but even that will be match-based.

Planetside 2 really is the only thing on the market that offers what it does to the scale that it does that I'm aware of.

I've been enjoying Hell Let Loose, which is 50v50 with vehicles.

Foxhole is kinda similar, you have to do logistics, can build bases, gather resources and all that stuff, but instead of beeing an First-Person Shooter it's kinda an top-down shooter.

It's really fun.

Years ago WWII Online was pretty great even with all its limitations. When it first opened up it was insane how many people played. There were some nasty technical issues that came up but it was still pretty amazing at the time. That game still exists but I'm betting the player base isn't high enough to produce the same game "feel". Player don't invest the time into the games they used to. In WWII Online you could walk 15 - 30 minutes easily. Tanks could only be pulled from certain areas, we had people drive a tank 30-45 minutes from the back of the front line to have a robust armored attack force. If you were on an AA or AT gun you could wait a long time then 10 minutes of absolutely insane game play. The newer games came out and people not only don't want to wait periods of time, they want to spawn in right way, at the battlefield, and so forth. I guess that game has adjusted and there are trucks and mobile spawn area so to speak.

Played most Battlefield games, 1942, 2142 (which was a ton of fun at the time), Planetside 1,Team Fortress, Counter Strike, and so on and so forth. Some on Console, most on PC. In more recent time I've played Mordau (swords not guns basically), Hell Let Loose, Post Scriptum and so forth. All fun but not to this scale.

As others have said this game is it at this scale.

Heroes and Generals would be a F2P alternative - by far not the best game, but you have 20 vs 20 battles with vehicles on quite open maps in World War 2. Think of a battle over a middle sized region in PS2 but with better gunplay and weapons that are actually lethal. No classes (custom equipment for each soldier) and it has a fair economy model (not P2W).

Angels fall first is similar but pay to play and still in early access, the MMOFPS genre is very limited sadly, not many game engines can support 1000 battles player like planetside can.

You can even get a premium account there just with ingame currency - and the starter weapons are actually quite good

Its the only mmofps. The last 15 yeears there is no progress in supported players for online games. PS2 is the only title trying to push it.

Foxhole is a top down perspective. But if you want a giant war simulator. It does it a LOT better then Planetside 2. You have groups where their only job is to make and replenish supplies for the front lines and never fight.

Squad - It is honestly kind of similar. Just think of each server like an alert. You can be air or ground vehicle specialists. Or go infintry and have squad play.

Hell Let Loose - WW2 very similar to Squad. Each server hosts a map. Both sides of the war have to push against the other.

I know a lot of people claims Planetside 2 doesn't have competition since nothing is like it. Honestly, these 2 games are VERY similar to it.

Differences?
3 Factions (PS2) - 2 Factions (Squad)
Futuristic (PS2) - Modern (Squad) - Past (HLL)
Tactics to win fights (All)
Commanders/Squad Leads with perks (All)
Alerts/timers to change map (All)
Base Building (PS2 only)
Flying (Squad & PS2) - Call in air strikes (All)
Squad oriented ground forces (All)
Massive Fights (all)

Honestly if you want conistent large scale fights. Squad and Hell Let Loose are probably better bets because they have full servers you can join. PS2 you have to work for those large scale fights to happen sometimes. The ONLY reason I think PS2 is better is because you dont ever feel like you are loading into a new map/server. In reality at the end of an alert that is what you are doing.
