Pay to win?
Hey,

To what degree (if at all) is this game pay to win? I know you can use in game currencies to buy weapons/attachments instead of real money but aren't there also some that can only be purchased with real money? How big an advantage do these ones give you? I suck at fps anyway but just wondering.

Its not pay2win, Some weapons have golden or black versions, but they have the same stats as the "nonpainted" weapons which you can buy with the ingame currencie

That's nice to hear.
I would say there is 1 slight p2w advatage. It would be camo. Camoflauge can hide you better and can be bought by real money only, therefore giving you a slight advantage if you are not playing as infiltrator class (which can go nearly invisible).

The best camo and helmet still is the standard one. No one expects you to be dangerous if you look like you barely just started playing.

Some people will say that some of the guns are P2W. This is only really true if you knew what gun you wanted, that did what you wanted it to do and best fit your playstile. Otherwise you join the many, many people on forums that went and payed for a gun and found it didn't do what they wanted it to.

Some say implants are. And while there are some that can give you a leg up, it will never be game breakingly good or stop some lucky shot from stopping you (literally, lol) dead. And even then the drops are random with again forums have more than a few posts where people complain about putting game breaking amounts of money in and got jack-s**t out the other end.

And as for camos. As B4rr said, most people will see some one with no camo and often without even meaning to drop their guard then and there.
I myself like to run in a black camo (confusingly called "gray scales") and because I normally play NC it helps make me look like both the TR (black and red) and the VS (really, really dark purple) to the point I often find there's a split second before the other guy will shoot me and some fun times where the enemy has run right past me from behind me. The downside is the same is often true in reverse for my team mates... Who will often see dark camo and think "enemy!". ....I get TKed a lot. Even by NC standards.

There are vehicle upgrades and tool upgrades that require ingame currency (not sidegrades like weps) but if you want them all maxed, you need to spend huge amounts of ingame currency so if you're pay2win, then you could exchange money for the currency and max all of them, giving you a slight advantage.

Progression is slow but no weapon/module can't be unlocked by paying only

At worst its Pay 2 Progress faster from my 20 ish hours of gametime

However stock tanks are simply ♥♥♥♥ without upgrades its impossible to face equivalent vehicles and even lighter one sometime

Come on Fogs Trot, it's not impossible.

Not pay to win. Every gun, module, upgrade you can unlock with in game earned cash.

Only cosmetics are behind a paywall and those won't help you win but just looking fabulous.

The pink camo is 100% worth.

I have to say that Planetside 2 is fairly balanced between paying and playing. You can unlock every weapon with a default skin without paying. It may takes a while to unlock new expensive upgrades and weapons but the developers changed the Certifacationpoint(Ingame currency without paying) grinding, to get it faster. New players will get 100 Certs per Lvl till Lvl 15 to give them an easier start. The only pay to win aspect is the camouflage skins, which give you really just a slightly advantage. And the "new" Implantsystem where you have to buy crates with Certs to get a few (3 or 9) in a random drop. And it takes ages to Upgrade them or to get the one Implant you are really looking forward to. BUT the developers allready said they will change the system that also non paying players get a better chance to get the implants easier.
So to sum it up paying just speeds up your progres in the game and don't give paying players advantages except for the camouflages. But for real the camo doesn't help you as much you still can be spotted and well a glowing triangle over your head will give your position away anyways.

I hope i could help answering your question :)

Reviving this just to save someone else from jumping off a cliff over this issue. This is pay to win... Period. Simply ignore everyone else who says otherwise (Yes they are just stupid and holding back humanity's evolutionary progress).

If you get quicker access to unlocks and 'currency' then you.... have ... an.... advantage.

It blows my mind how people even bother debating this.... If a person needs to spend hours/days/weeks to keep up with the unlocks (they DO give a major advantage) to keep up with someone with boosts/money/membership how are they on equal terms???

It doesn't matter if you can unlock most things by playing, spending weeks/months to get on the complete equal playing field is Pay to win. People need to wake up. Cosmetics ONLY are what make a true ftp game..............

-People that support this needless 'grind' in games today need to stay off the internet or at least stop people from wanting to kill themselves over their 'opinion that it is not ptw'.

You are taking the terms wording too literally and ignoring it's actual meaning. P2W has a very specific meaning. It requires that advantages in a game are ONLY purchasable by cash. Now, there are certainly non P2W examples that are just as bad. And PS2 MAY fall into that category.

However, since every advantage CAN be purchasable withouy any cash. It cannot be called P2W. Stop being ignorant. How the ♥♥♥♥ do so few people in the gaming community understand the terminlogy of thier own damn hobby?

Btw. your sub par education may not have taught you this. But when someone says somethign is not pay to win. That does NOT mean they are saying the game is BETTER than pay to win.

How brain dead are you?

I know exactly what it's literal meaning is. How in anyway does this have to do with education, stop sounding like an arrogant 60yo and understand the underlying problem.

P2W does NOT have a very specific meaning it is generally having an statistical advantage over others at a point in time, wherever that may be. From the VERY start if you are not on an equal playing field then it is not fair. IT IS SIMPLE AS THAT. It doesn't matter that I can by a car when I am 16 (newb)......... I would have a MUCH easier time getting one (that is nicer and faster) in my 20's or 30's with a better paying job (subscription). Time is a very important variable.

You support a needless grind and are completely oblivious to the fact that you are at a disadvantage for many hours. Until both players eventually unlock EVERYTHING a subscriber will be miles ahead of you in every class.... vehicle.... or aircraft unlock. The fact alone that you are never COMPLETELY on equal terms until you finally catch-up in unlocks means it IS pay to win. When you take into account that all these unlocks take months to get, you understand how stupid I think you are.

"But when someone says something is not pay to win. That does NOT mean they are saying the game is BETTER than pay to win."

-Who..... Whooo cares? Wh-When did I even talk about this?

0.0000000000000001 bonus damage is STILL an advantage irregardless of whether or not you are a competitive player.

TLDR: Months behined in potential unlocks means you are not equal as a ftp player...... Cosmetics are the ONLY way to have a true ftp model.

Stop being a disgusting sadist.

To all scubs that still claim ps2 is p2w.

Step 1: join the discord of your planetside server
Step 2: check for the pick up games
Step 3: join said pick up games and the bootcamp that is held before - u will be able to use every gun with every attachment and people will explain to you how the game works
Step 4: get wrecked by people with stock/cheap guns without camo
Step 5: come here again and tell us where the vets touched you

If you havent completed these 5 steps there is no point for you complaining about p2w because you dont even know how this game works. I dont care how many hundrets of hours you played. I know guys from 2012 that still suck ass, so I dont care for how long you play the game. Go play competitive and see for yourself.
