My in-game KDR (ie. It only adds a death to your stats when you respawn. Getting downed and revived by a medic doesn't add a death)
is an average of about 5 over the last 6 months.
This time last year it was an average of 4.5.
The year before that, 3.5.
The year before THAT, between 2 and 3.
Practice, practice, practice, kids.
(I don't know what my "true" KDR is. I don't think it's a good statistic because I intentionally play aggressively when I know there's medics nearby and I always accept revives. In Outfit operations I often get revived and downed and revived and downed so many times in 30 seconds during a mad push that it adds 10 deaths to my "true" KDR. I only judge myself by my in-game revive-friendly KDR because i think it's a better representation of skill)
My longest ever killstreak in a MAX was 110 (double Slug Scattercannons, at Mani Tower). My longest ever killstreak as infantry was 103 (Resist shield heavy with a stock Gauss Saw in a biolab). I wouldn't have been able to achieve either of them without a friend pocket supporting me throughout, so take it in context.
I would never judge another person by their KDR unless they deliberately shoved it in other people's faces and pretended it made them better than other people. Spoilers, it doesn't. I care a lot about my own KDR but that's as a personal challenge where I'm only competing with my past self. You can be a genuinely good player in this game that I'd love to fight alongside and not have a high KDR. Support players can still be legitimately great players, and I will respect someone way more for playing the objective than for being overprotective about their precious KDR (full disclosure, when I'm having a bad day emotionally I get overprotective, but i know it's a bad attitude and i try to keep with my usual doctrine to focus the objective as the most important thing).
Anyway was this a long post? This turned into a long post...
Here's my stats if you're interested.

KD on my main is 2.7, on my alts above 3.
6000+ hours playtime.
Average player is likely below 1 KDR. Most people are potatoes in games, really. But don't get discouraged. This game is not your usual shooter and KDR matters relatively. As long as you are contributing to your faction and having fun, if you are under 1KD doesn't really matter.
It's also harder now to have a high KDR in any form because the game is 7 years old and the average player is more likely to be a high skill veteran compared to a few years ago. I feel bad for new players joining the game now because every fight has some really strong players in it smashing things up everywhere they go. A friend of mine recently joined the game and he's not a bad player, but he's visibly agitated every day because every infantry fight he goes to there's dozens of very high skill players instakilling him all the time.
I almost physically wince now when I kill really low level players, because I'm afraid that they'll not understand what things they did wrong that led up to me killing them. Quite often my playstyles mean that I kill people in ways that are unusual or hard to understand if you're not familiar with the game, and I'm really worried that what I do contributes to driving away newer players who think that they just died because of some complete bulls**t.
I kinda wish I could just see a UI indicator over the heads of enemies showing if they're below level 20, because I would just not attack them at all if they hadn't seen me yet. I understand why that shouldn't be added to the game, though, but I can dream.
Join a hardcore outfit. Seriously.
The overall planetside experience is so much more enjoyable and positive for people of all skill levels in organized outfit operations. Even outside of Ops nights, there's usually people willing to do fun stuff together and it makes bad fights still fun because you're all working together meaningfully.
"Hardcore" should mean the effort, not the starting skill level. No hardcore outfit worth their salt should ever refuse a player on their initial skill level. It's about what you're willing to put in, your attitude, and your communication skills. I used to be guild leader for one of Cobalt's most high skill hardcore outfits ( [KAIN] ) and we regularly accepted people with in-game KDRs below 1, because what we wanted was a positive, engaged, friendly attitude, patient and polite communication skills, and a strong desire to learn without hubris.
My best K/D of the day was a 15, with only two deaths and most of them were power knife kills. That was a fun few hours. And yes. Dumb luck played a very large part in that outcome, as did how much time I like to spend in a stalker cloak. But mostly in that order.
Since I'm an engineer I have a lot of vehicle kills 17K +. I solo so not many revives when I get killed either. It's a big game and if you play some what aggressively you'll end up on the wrong end of a 2+ v1 situation a lot of the times.
KDR is somewhat important as it obviously lets you know how your doing.
Had a guy once accuse me of using aimbot, He later Made fun of my 0.7k/d....
My total k/d should be somewhere around 1.3-1.5 after 800h. i Just started playing heavy, never farmed infrantry with vehicles.
I mostly just run arround and annoy the enemy. Im the guy that simple walks up to the enemy router to destroy it, run around enemy lines reviving infiltrators, Sprint past 3 enemy maxes as medic to confuse the enemy and get my team to push.
infantry HA exclusively
Between sessions, I get anywhere from 1.2 kd to 2-something kd, and occasionally 3 or higher.
I could play for kills or k/d, but I'm less anal about it now that I've got higher than 1. Now I play more toward the objective.
Anyway, I'm not one of the monsters. I can't clear a building by myself, unless they're noobs. But I can contribute, and that's good enough for me.
My vehicle play tends to make my K/D drop, since I'm usually a driver in a harasser... and I drive a lot better than I shoot, lol.
You dont just suck, you probably dont know how to manipulate the K/D ratio. If you just played max all the time your K/D would be amazing.
My total K/D for all time is at 0.54 after 854 hours. But my current K/D is at 1.24 and trending higher.
Mostly because i know how to play max now and can get massive kill streaks same with stalker and harrasser skills have improved greatly. I dont try to get a high K/D ratio I mostly drive sunderers :p
Lol just checked currently have 3 days and 16 hours driving a sunderer haha.

I often play support, distract enemies or just run into line of fire so others dont. KDR kinda represents the playstyle of some people.
As of late i only play Heavy or stalker and mabye a engineer just for the hell of it.
Heavy if i want to carry ♥♥♥♥ and stalker if i want to have fun and chill(sometimes its harder to play stalker then heavy, since i dont sit still much). Also With the New NS max i have changed to the NS faction and is now playing the NS firemage alot :3
I like your playstyle
