There are two things you can do that can help you decide which. First, go to the warpgate and in the middle of the main room click on the termianls to change map.
Click on the VR room. Everything in there is free (so long as you don't click on the "buy" option) so you can test out how they each feel.
Second, the game gives you the option to trial weapons for 30 mins. Find a large battle, trial the guns each in turn and see how they feel to use in combat (always remember that trialing a gun like this will, at least, make it feel at least three-four times more amazing than it will feel when you do get it).
Other than that. An SMG can be used by all (non-MAX) classes and is normally meant more for close-CQC fights, while a carbine can only be used by two and tends to be best in close-med fights.
Except maybe this carbine which looks like it tried to swallow a shotgun at some point.
The Horizon on the other hand got buffed, because its first iteration was rather weak. Now it's a great gun.
Horizon is gimmicky at best. It's basically crap and the only use for it is for memes and style points.
Canis is a better weapon but will work exclusively in CQC and requires you to go for the head. The spin-up mechanic makes it inferior to other fast-firing VS SMGs but can still perform if you know how to use it.
Unstable ammunition got nerfed so now it's not really worth using it, unless you truly have trouble hitting the head at hug distance.
